Role Overview
Registered Nurse - OPD (Ophthalmology) at NMC Healthcare. The post holder will always work within the scope of practice, putting the health, wellbeing and safety of their patient first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate their needs.
Role Purpose
Provide and coordinate comprehensive patient care in the ophthalmology outpatient department, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of healthcare errors.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Care Planning
- Perform systematic patient assessment, reassessment and collect pertinent data about the patient's health or situation.
- Understand and analyse the assessment information and data.
- Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
- Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
- Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders.
- Perform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
Monitoring and Clinical Observation
- Record vital signs, recognize, address and escalate all abnormalities.
- Accurately monitor and record patient's condition.
- Perform assessment and reassessments on patient as per assessment policy.
- Report any abnormality in a patient's condition immediately to the medical staff and escalate as and when required.
- Ensure investigation reports are available for consultation if applicable.
- Demonstrate excellent observation skills, ability to think critically and make quick and effective decisions.
Treatment and Medication Administration
- Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions.
- Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions.
- Provide wound care management.
- Perform routine and advanced nursing procedures and skills.
- Able to perform ECG.
- Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.
- Preparation of patient for emergency surgeries.
Procedural Support
- Assist in medical procedures, invasive or non-invasive, as needed.
- Assist physician with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
- Able to assist with procedure including YAG Laser (Posterior Capsule Opacity/Iridectomy), Fluorescein Angiography, Minor surgeries (Chalazion, Sebaceous cyst excision), Minor procedures (syringing, probing, Punctum plug insertion, removal of sutures (corneal), Sub-tarsal injections), Collagen cross Linkage Surgery, Refractive Surgeries, Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL), Pan Retinal Photocoagulation Laser (PRP), Botox Injection, Corneal foreign body removal.
Patient Admission, Transfer and Discharge
- Facilitate the process of safe patient admission, transfer and discharge.
- Complete care and safety of patients in the assigned clinic.
Emergency Response
- Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope such as but not limited to Basic Life Support.
- Demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures, equipment, and protocols relevant to the department.
Compliance and Professional Development
- Work within the scope of practice at all times.
- Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.
- Competent with all the mandatory and unit specific competencies supported and assigned on the Elsevier platform to ensure adherence to evidence-based practices.
- Participate in ongoing programs and certification to support professional growth and maintain clinical competency.
- Comply with unit Scope of Service.
- Demonstrate understanding and utilization of evidence-based healthcare.
- Document on patient record as per current standards and policies.
- Manage their own professional re-licensure.
Health Promotion and Safety
- Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.
- Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.
Operational Management
- Organization of assigned duties.
- Able to function efficiently in patients care within the assigned clinic and relieve other nursing units in the hospital if necessary.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order, reporting any fault to Nurse Manager/Engineering.
Qualifications & Experience
- Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates.
- Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
Additional Information
- Be willing to work across departments and on call when necessary.
