Registered Nurse - OPD (OBGYN)

Role Overview

Registered Nurse - OPD (OBGYN) at NMC Healthcare, based in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Outpatient Department, providing direct patient care, clinical assessment, and procedural support in a fast-paced healthcare setting.

Role Purpose

To deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care to patients attending the OBGYN Outpatient Department. The role encompasses patient assessment, clinical procedures, vital monitoring, and emergency preparedness while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and institutional policies.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Care Planning

• Assess and identify patients' needs, implementing and monitoring the patient's medical plan and treatment.
• Perform systematic patient assessment and reassessment, collecting pertinent data about the patient's health and situation.
• Understand and analyse assessment information and data.
• Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
• Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
• Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders.
• Perform assessment and reassessments on patients as per assessment policy.
• Perform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for the patient's age.
• Provide and coordinate patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions.
• Provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
• Work with a team of physicians and other healthcare specialists or allied health in various settings.

Vital Signs & Monitoring

• Record vital signs, recognize, address, and escalate all abnormalities.
• Accurately monitor and record the patient's condition.
• Report any abnormality in the patient's condition immediately to medical staff and escalate as and when required.
• Ensure investigation reports are available for consultation if applicable.

Clinical Skills & Procedures

• Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.
• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope, such as Basic Life Support.
• Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.
• Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions.
• Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions.
• Provide wound care management.
• Assist in medical procedures, invasive or non-invasive, as needed.
• Perform CTG (Cardiotocography).
• Assist with procedures including IUCD Insertion, IUCD Removal, Insertion of Pessary, Cryo-cautery to Cervix, Cryo-cautery to Genital Warts, I.U.I (Intrauterine Insemination), Removal of Shirodkhar Suture, Hormone Pellet Implant, Vaginal Examination, Pap Smear, Laser Procedures, Wound Dressing, and Urethral Catheterization.
• Perform routine and advanced nursing procedures and skills.
• Assist physician with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.

Patient Safety & Emergency Care

• Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.
• Perform nursing care for outpatient department patients in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of healthcare errors.
• Demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures, equipment, and protocols relevant to the department.
• Prepare patients for emergency surgeries.
• Demonstrate excellent observation skills, able to think critically and make quick and effective decisions.

Documentation & Compliance

• Document on patient record as per current standards and policies.
• Demonstrate competency with all mandatory and unit-specific competencies supported and assigned on the Elsevier platform to ensure adherence to evidence-based practices.
• Demonstrate understanding and utilization of evidence-based healthcare.
• Comply with unit Scope of Service.
• Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.

Unit & Department Operations

• Ensure complete care and safety of patients in the assigned clinic.
• Organize assigned duties.
• Function efficiently in patient care within the assigned clinic and relieve other nursing units in the hospital if necessary.
• Facilitate the process of safe patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
• Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order, reporting any fault to Nurse Manager or Engineering.

Professional Development

• Participate in ongoing programs and certification to support professional growth and maintain clinical competency.
• Maintain competency in all aspects of nursing care.

Qualifications & Experience

• Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all qualifications and experience these mandates require.
• Manage own professional re-licensure.
• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.

Skills & Competencies

• Communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written).
• Evidence of ability to work as part of an inter-professional team.
• Demonstrate organizational and administrative skills with use of the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
