Role Purpose

Provide and coordinate comprehensive patient care in the Critical Care Unit, including assessment, treatment planning, clinical interventions, and patient education in collaboration with an interprofessional healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Assessment

• Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment.
• Perform systematic patient assessment, re-assessment, and collect pertinent data about the patient's health or situation.
• Understand and analyse the assessment information and data.
• Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
• Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
• Record vital signs, recognize, address, and escalate all abnormalities.
• Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.

Treatment & Intervention

• Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions.
• Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions.
• Provide wound care management.
• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope, including but not limited to Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation.
• Assist in medical procedures, invasive or non-invasive, as needed.
• Perform a predominant role in preparation, administration, and documentation of medication.
• Perform a wide range of nursing procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety, and comfort, including those requiring strict aseptic technique.

Critical Care Procedures

• Assist in all procedures related to ICU including inserting all invasive lines, CRRT, hemodialysis, LP, all types of draining, tracheostomy insertion, cardiac output, IABP, and thermoregulation.
• Provide comprehensive pre-operative and post-operative nursing care to all surgical patients.
• Demonstrate competency in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and participate as a member of Code Blue hospital wide.

Care Planning & Coordination

• Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's family members.
• Facilitate the process of safe patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
• Assist with transfer of patients within the healthcare facilities and serve as transport nurse for patients during ambulance transport.
• Work with a team of physicians and other healthcare specialists or allied health in various settings.

Patient & Family Support

• Educate patients and the public about various health conditions.
• Provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
• Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.

Clinical Knowledge & Safety

• Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.
• Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain and update all relevant patient documentation and medical records as per hospital policy and procedure.
• Follow the reporting mechanisms and chain of command in the nursing services department, ensuring all patient care issues are correctly and promptly reported.

Resource Management

• Demonstrate an economical approach to the utilization of equipment and supplies while assisting the head nurse to maintain an appropriate ward stock.

Qualifications & Experience

• Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates require.
• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.

Skills & Competencies

• Communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written).
• Demonstrate organizational and administrative skills for use of the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
• Work effectively as part of an inter-professional team.
• Communicate effectively in Arabic (desirable).

Additional Information

• Manage own professional re-licensure.
• Be willing to work across departments when necessary.
