Role Purpose
The Registered Midwife provides safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care to women and newborns during the antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and newborn periods, while upholding professional scope of practice, clinical competencies, and organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice & Patient Care
- Practice in accordance with regulatory Scope of Practice, ensuring completion of all competencies and required clinical privileging prior to providing direct patient care.
- Provide safe and compassionate care during the antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and newborn periods.
- Provide safe and evidence-based care in relation to spontaneous vaginal deliveries, assist with instrumental vaginal deliveries, and caesarean deliveries for the mother and newborn, reflective of scope of practice, life support provider status, and clinical privileging.
- Assist the obstetrician with required procedures or perform as per scope of practice, competence, and clinical privileging, such as artificial rupture of membranes and sterile vaginal examinations.
- Monitor the progress of labouring mothers and perform cardiotocography monitoring, interpret findings of fetal heart rates, and recognize when to escalate to the obstetrician.
- Support women during childbirth reflective of the woman's birthing plan, demonstrate knowledge regarding stem cell collection, monitor all stages of labour and fetal condition in accordance with evidence-based practice and the WHO Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.
- Perform immediate post-delivery care of the mother to include fundal massage, placental examination, quantifiable blood loss assessment, and monitoring of vital signs, with immediate recognition and escalation to the obstetrician as needed.
- Perform immediate post-delivery care of the newborn to include taking of cord blood gases, performing the initial steps of newborn care, newborn identification, physical assessment, and monitoring of vital signs, with immediate recognition and escalation to the neonatologist as needed.
Maternal & Newborn Health Promotion
- Support, promote, and protect the ten steps within the WHO Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative recommendations during the antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and newborn periods.
- Provide education and support strategies to the mother and newborn that encourage early breastfeeding and skin-to-skin bonding.
Patient Education & Support
- Provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
Professional Responsibilities
- Manage professional re-licensure.
- Be willing to work across departments when necessary.
Qualifications & Experience
- Appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all qualifications and experience mandated by that authority.
- Desirable: Evidenced ability to work as part of an inter-professional team.
Skills & Competencies
- Clear and effective communication in English (spoken and written).
- Desirable: Effective communication in Arabic.
- Desirable: Organizational and administrative skills with electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
Additional Information
- Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
