Role Overview
Protection Engineer – Site Supervision at WSP Middle East. This role supervises, tests, commissions, and maintains protection systems in substations, power plants, and transmission/distribution networks.
Role Purpose
Ensure reliable operation of protection schemes, compliance with standards, and safe execution of site works across electrical infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design Review & Approval
- Review contractors' design drawings and provide design approval.
- Verify protection and control schematics based on protection requirements.
- Verify relay setting calculations for existing and new protection devices.
- Verify adequacy checks for current and voltage transformer calculations.
Testing & Commissioning
- Witness the testing and commissioning of all protection equipment.
- Ensure the protection and control philosophy is correctly implemented at site as per client specification.
- Witness the testing of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) schemes for Transformer and Reactor.
- Review inspection and testing procedures, FAT/SAT formats, and method statements.
Protection Systems & Configuration
- Demonstrate proficiency with protection devices from major OEMs including Siemens, GE (Alstom), and ABB.
- Assist the client with implementation of critical protection schemes including Cable Differential/Distance, Transformer Differential and REF, Bus bar Differential (Low Impedance and High Impedance), and Reactor Differential.
- Ensure all protection and control signals are configured to substation SCADA (IEC 61850) and National Control Centre (IEC 104).
Troubleshooting & Support
- Troubleshoot faults in substations related to protection and control.
- Provide corrective actions to client.
Site Safety & Methodology
- Review method statements submitted by the contractor to ensure safe and reliable protection stability testing of Cable, Transformer, Reactor, and Busbar.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering (or equivalent).
- Minimum 6 years of experience in protection and control engineering in substations, transmission and distribution, or power plants.
- Hands-on experience with protection relays including Siemens, ABB, GE, Schneider, and SEL.
- Knowledge of relay coordination, fault analysis, and power system protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, etc.).
- Familiarity with testing tools including Omicron, Doble, and Megger.
- Strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE, and local utility standards.
