Principal Piping Designer

Role Overview

Principal Piping Designer at McDermott. The role directly impacts the effectiveness of the piping design team and related teams, working autonomously within established procedures and coordinating the work of others as a lead.

Role Purpose

Deliver design and engineering of process facilities within specified timeframes while maintaining safety, quality, and constructability standards across Pre-FEED, FEED, and Detailed Design phases. Exchange ideas and information relating to piping design effectively, propose process improvements, and act as a technical lead coordinating team activities and discipline interfaces.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Delivery

• Perform design and engineering of process facilities within specified time while adhering to maintenance, safety, and quality standards.
• Consider constructability, economics, and operation requirements during Pre-FEED, FEED, or Detailed Design phases.
• Develop 3D models and ensure clash-free coordination with all other discipline requirements.
• Approve drawings including plot plans per project specifications, McDermott procedures, and process design practice.
• Develop plant design, 3D modelling, and drawings in accordance with work hours and schedule.
• Add input into the plant layout narrative in accordance with the agreed scope of work.

Leadership and Team Coordination

• Complete assignments and facilitate the work activities of others.
• Set priorities, organize own work and time to meet objectives, and forecast and plan resource requirements as Lead Designer.
• Lead the design team to complete tasks within planned schedule and budget in accordance with standards, McDermott procedures, and project-specific procedures.
• Support and supervise less-experienced members within the design team.
• Monitor and coordinate the design team remotely if required when acting as Lead or area lead.
• Lead the project in a Multi Office Project Execution Environment (MOPEX) when acting as Lead or area lead.

Stakeholder Management and Communications

• Act as project-based discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with Project Team, Client, vendor/supplier, and/or subcontractor counterparts.
• Ensure that inter-discipline aspects of the design and deliverables are addressed.
• Coordinate all activities within own discipline and discipline interfaces with other disciplines.
• Ensure effective communications among other disciplines and effective management of change.
• Exchange ideas and information effectively and deal directly with others.

Quality, Compliance, and Governance

• Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with McDermott requirements, Client and Statutory Design Codes, Standards, or Procedures with a particular focus on Health and Safety Policies.
• Support the Department Manager with the designer's appraisals.

Coordination and Review

• Coordinate 3D model reviews and ensure review comments are closed.
• Attend project kickoff, review meetings, vendor meetings, and model reviews.
• Support Lead Piping Engineer in measuring progress and productivity.

Issue and Change Management

• Identify issues as soon as they arise and follow up with any required corrective action.
• Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications in the Change Management System.
• Assist the Lead Piping Engineer in raising technical queries, preparing the piping estimate, and job scope changes when acting as Lead Designer.
• Exercise judgment based on previous experience, practices, and precedents to identify and solve problems that arise with little or no precedent.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 10 years with a major contractor or consultant, of which 10+ years in oil and gas performing Pre-FEED, FEED, and Detailed Design.
• High School graduate with a diploma in Mechanical Design, Drafting, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 1 or 2 projects of working experience in E3D and/or S3D.
• Capable of leading projects.
• General understanding of how process equipment is maintained and operated.

Skills & Competencies

• Detailed knowledge of 3D CAD systems including E3D or SP3D.
• Detailed knowledge of AutoCAD and/or AutoLISP.
• Programming, 3D modeling, menu, and/or macro compilation skills.
• Familiar with the associated local regulatory environment and international and national industry standards and specifications.
• Knowledge of QA systems.
• Strong communication skills.

Additional Information

• Flexible for business travel and assignments.
• Reports to Lead Piping Engineer or Lead Piping Designer (Project) and Supervising Department Manager (Functional).
• Supervises piping design team assigned to a project or part of a project during detailing and production phases.
