Principal Civil/Structural Designer

Role Overview

Principal Civil/Structural Designer at McDermott. This role directly impacts the effectiveness of the Civil/Structural Design team and related teams, requiring autonomous work within established procedures and coordination of others' work.

Role Purpose

The Principal Civil/Structural Designer leads the development and delivery of high-quality civil and structural design deliverables, from conceptual through detail phases. The role combines technical expertise with team leadership, ensuring designs meet project specifications, codes, standards, and schedules while maintaining clash-free coordination across all disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Design Development & Delivery

• Prepare and develop arrangement and detail conceptual, FEED, studies, and detail design drawings of high technical quality and professional consistent presentation, ensuring clarity and ease of construction.
• Develop 3D models and ensure clash-free coordination with all other disciplines.
• Organize design work, including setting up 3D and 2D systems.
• Prepare Civil and Structural layouts from data generated by others in close liaison with Civil and Structural Engineers and counterparts from other disciplines.
• Ensure design deliverables are completed and issued per project specifications, MDR, and project Level 2 & 3 procedures and within agreed schedules and budgets.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Check designs, with particular emphasis on interfaces with other disciplines.
• Check designs for operational requirements, constructability, maintainability, and HSE aspects.
• Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with McDermott requirements, Client and Statutory Design Codes, Standards, or Procedures with a particular focus on Health and Safety Policies.
• Review other discipline drawings.
• Review supplier drawings.

Technical Expertise & Engineering

• Perform the engineering of Miscellaneous steel.
• Act as a coordinator and technical expert within the process of development and/or modification of 3D Macros applied at E3D/S3D.
• Become fully familiar with Project Scope of Work, specifications, schedule, and inter-discipline requirements, including identifying concerns as early as practicable and taking appropriate initiatives to address them.
• Assist Lead Engineer/Designer in raising technical queries, preparing estimates and job scope changes.
• Participate in proposals as an expert for CSA design work.

Team Leadership & Coordination

• Supervise Designers and Associate Designers.
• Monitor and coordinate the design team remotely if required and lead a project in a Multi Office Project Execution Environment (MOPEX).
• Direct and coordinate medium or large Design team as Lead Designer.
• Lead projects as Lead Designer, engaging the participation of other disciplines.
• Coordinate all activities within own discipline and discipline interfaces with other disciplines.
• Lead the design team of the assigned work area and complete within the planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, MDR, and project-specific procedures and to a high professional standard.
• Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on the assigned project, including scope, deliverables, schedule, and all Discipline workforce resources; agree on allocations with the Engineering Manager.
• Maintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying any required corrective action.

Planning & Resource Management

• Set priorities, organize own work and time to meet objectives, and as Lead Designer, forecast and plan resource requirements.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

• Attend project Kickoff and Review meetings, Vendor meetings as Lead Designer.
• Act as project-based Discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with the Project Team, Customer, vendor/supplier and/or subcontractor counterparts, and relevant agencies such as certifying authorities, auditors, third parties, etc.
• Ensure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identified.

Administration & Support

• Provide drafting support as required.
• Execute relevant administration and filing.

Process Improvement

• Propose improvements to processes and methods within the Civil/Structural Design discipline.

Qualifications & Experience

• High School graduate with a diploma in Civil or Structural disciplines or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years minimum with major contractor or consultant.
• 5+ years of experience in oil and gas.
• Detailed knowledge of associated industry detailing standards and codes.
• Minimum 2 projects working and/or Review experience in E3D and/or S3D.
• Capable of leading projects.

Skills & Competencies

• Detailed knowledge of 3D and 2D drafting and material control systems (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation).
• Ability to perform the engineering of Miscellaneous steel.
• Technical expertise in Civil and Structural Design.
• Ability to exchange ideas and information relating to Civil/Structural Design effectively.
• Ability to work autonomously within established Civil/Structural Design procedures and practices.

Additional Information

Reports to: Project Lead Designer, Lead Engineer, or Project Engineering Manager; Functional: Supervising Department Manager.

Liaise with: Lead Designers, Engineers, all other Engineering and Design disciplines assigned to the project, Project Engineer, Material Control Team, Document Control, and Customer representatives.

Supervises: Design team assigned to a project or part of the project during the detailing and production phases.
