Practical Nurse

Role Overview

Practical Nurse at SEHA, delivering patient-centered nursing care under the supervision of Registered Nurses in compliance with evidence-based practice and organizational standards.

Role Purpose

To maintain high standards of nursing care for patients by implementing evidence-based clinical practice, supporting activities of daily living, ensuring patient safety and dignity, and collaborating effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

• Maintain high standards of nursing care for patients working within evidence-based guidelines and unit-specific competencies.
• Assess and implement nursing care for patients under Registered Nurse supervision, ensuring a patient-centered approach.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living in accordance with the patient care plan, including meal distribution and hygiene support.
• Demonstrate service excellence and act as a patient advocate to support patient dignity and rights at all times.
• Understand basic indications for medications, recognize side effects, and report appropriately to the Registered Nurse.
• Inform the Registered Nurse of patient observations and care provided and document appropriately.
• Report any significant changes in the patient's condition to a Registered Nurse immediately.
• Respond to all levels of emergencies according to organizational policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate integration of unique knowledge and technical skills required for the specialty as per role-specific clinical practice definition and SEHA competency and training matrix.

Communication

• Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with completion of documentation within appropriate timeframes according to SEHA policies and guidelines.
• Navigate Malaffi accurately and efficiently within scope of practice.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in managing effective and efficient patient-centered care in a professional manner.
• Promote and support a collaborative practice model.
• Communicate effectively and clearly with patients, carers, and all healthcare professionals.
• Contribute effectively to the support of new staff, nursing students, and other staff.

Performance Improvement and Risk Management

• Understand complaint management processes, take action to resolve where possible, and report according to organizational policy.
• Assist Registered Nurses and clerical staff in administrative duties as required.
• Ensure provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patients and family.
• Identify environmental risks, escalate concerns, and maintain records of reporting as appropriate.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and comply with isolation precautions and hand hygiene.
• Comply with all annual mandatory Health and Safety training as per SEHA policy.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of International and HAAD patient safety goals.
• Participate in, contribute to, and implement quality assurance standards as per local guidelines.

Education

• Assess patient and family education needs, plan for, provide, and evaluate outcomes.
• Assist in providing a suitable environment that supports educational needs.
• Ensure patients and families are provided with comprehensive written information and resources to meet their healthcare needs.
• Engage in health promotion activities in the healthcare organization and community.

Professional Responsibilities

• Assist with the orientation of new staff and promote a learning environment.
• Complete mandatory and unit-specific competencies and demonstrate ongoing compliance with appropriate evidence.
• Identify own professional learning needs in conjunction with the Manager, Charge Nurse, and Clinical Resource Nurse, and develop a learning plan as required.
• Initiate or participate in clinical research that contributes to continual improvement in standards of care.
• Develop and maintain own Professional Portfolio.
• Obtain accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Units in compliance with DOH requirements.

Compliance and Organizational Standards

• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures, and practices and ensure alignment with SEHA facilities policies.
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure, certification, and other mandatory training within established timeframes.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding any information exchanged or received in accordance with SEHA release of information and password policies.
• Assume the role of a brand ambassador for the facility and promote a customer-focused philosophy in dealing with any stakeholders.
• Maintain positive and effective working relationships within the department and division and with other departments and sections within the facility.
• Uphold organizational customer service standards at all times.
• Adhere to the guiding principles and values inherent in the SEHA Nursing Model of Care.
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations of the organization.
• Contribute to wider corporate and organizational development needs as appropriate within scope of practice.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned relevant to the basic responsibilities of the role.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma of Nursing not less than 18 months course duration.
