Power Production Technician

Role Overview

Power Production Technician at Amentum. The role provides operations, maintenance, and repair support for electrical power generation systems, automatic transfer switches, synchronization equipment, and fuel systems at a government facility.

Role Purpose

To deliver reliable and continuous prime power support for mission-critical operations by installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical power generation systems, backup generators, and associated equipment, while minimizing scheduled power outages and ensuring compliance with technical standards and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

• Operate medium and low voltage generators as required, including start-up, load transfer, generation, and shutdown of all associated electrical power equipment.
• Monitor and adjust generator and electrical output performance as required.
• Ensure adequate fuel stores are available for continuous operation of generating plants.
• Switch operating generators to maintain electrical output while permitting servicing on generators taken offline.
• Observe key and critical operational parameters and take appropriate measures in the event of out-of-tolerance conditions.
• Perform 24-hour, 7-day week shift operations where continuous power is required.

Installation and Maintenance

• Install, remove, and operate electrical power generating and control systems, automatic or manual transfer switches, and associated equipment.
• Check equipment for serviceability and position equipment such as gasoline and diesel engines, generators, switchgear, air compressors, and other power generating auxiliary equipment.
• Inspect, test, and service component systems including safety, fuel, lubrication, cooling, and air pressure systems; pumps, regulators, governors, and accessory equipment.
• Perform facility management and maintenance and repair for fuel systems supporting facility stationary and emergency backup generators.
• Provide inspections and maintenance as required for all generators, automatic transfer switches, synchronization gears, and light carts.

Compliance and Standards

• Check installed equipment to ensure compliance with publications, policies, and directives.
• Use technical orders where applicable and employ good commercial practices in all generator operations, including AFMAN 32-1062, applicable UFCs, manufacturer instructions, industry standards, and environmental and occupational safety requirements.

Monitoring and Adjustment

• Observe and interpret instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, frequency meters, synchro scopes, automatic temperature and pressure recorders, and engine oil, fuel, and coolant gauges.
• Adjust engine generator systems to maintain proper voltage, current, frequency, and synchronization.
• Synchronize multiple generators when needed.

Support Services

• Provide refueling support services to enable refueling of all operational generators on an ongoing basis.

General Duties

• Perform all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.
• Develop and maintain a safe work environment and complete all training requirements.
• Fulfill self-aid and buddy aid responsibilities and participate in emergency response tasks.
• Serve on safety committees and teams as appropriate.
• Conform to Amentum Quality Policy and carry out job activities in compliance with applicable Amentum Quality System documents and customer contracts.
• Read, understand, and implement general and specific operational, safety, quality, and environmental requirements of all plans, procedures, and policies pertaining to the job.

Qualifications & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent training and experience.
• Valid driver's license.
• Minimum of five (5) years' experience in the electrical power generation field.
• Power production journeyman or master technician certification or equivalent.
• Experience with operating and maintaining generators ranging from 5 to 4,300 kilowatts is desired.
• US Citizenship required for facility credentials and authorization at this work location.

Skills & Competencies

• Knowledge of principles of electronics and electricity, including generation, conversion, transformation, distribution, and utilization.
• Knowledge of types, capacity, and purpose of low voltage circuits, circuit breakers, switches (automatic and manual type), fuses, regulators, relays, instruments, and meters associated with electric generation and distribution.
• Ability to interpret instrument and meter readings.
• Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, drawings, and technical publications.
• Knowledge of techniques for operating and maintaining internal combustion engines, generators, generating plants, distribution panels, and accessory equipment.
• Knowledge of use and purpose of test equipment.
• Knowledge of safety rules and practices, grounding practices, and environmental policies.
• Knowledge of principles of management.
• Knowledge of operation and repair of electrical power production systems.
• Ability to manage resources and activities devoted to installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical power generating and control systems.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials and authorization.
