Role Purpose

The Platform Administrator manages, maintains, and optimizes SQL Server databases while ensuring data accuracy, security, and availability. The role develops and implements robust information security measures to protect sensitive data and systems, maintains server environments and networks, and supports GIS systems and services.

Key Responsibilities

Database Administration

• Maintain SQL Server databases, ensuring optimal performance, security, and reliability.
• Develop and execute database backup and recovery procedures to safeguard critical data.
• Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies to improve efficiency.
• Ensure data integrity and consistency by implementing data validation and quality control measures.
• Provide technical support to application developers and other team members regarding database usage and best practices.
• Collaborate with the GIS team to optimize database structures and queries for efficient data management and analysis.

GIS Systems & Infrastructure

• Deploy and maintain GIS systems and applications.
• Maintain server infrastructure, including virtualization environments such as VMware and Windows Server.
• Configure and manage network devices and protocols to ensure optimal connectivity and performance.
• Install, configure, and maintain operating systems, application software, and system utilities.

Security & Compliance

• Maintain comprehensive information security plans and policies, aligned with industry best practices and standards such as ISO 27001.
• Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and penetration testing to identify and mitigate security risks.
• Implement and maintain security controls, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls, to protect systems and data from unauthorized access.
• Respond to security incidents and breaches, conducting thorough investigations and implementing corrective measures.
• Educate employees on security awareness and best practices to prevent security breaches and data loss.
• Ensure system security by implementing and maintaining security measures and best practices, collaborating with the Information Security Specialist.

System Administration & Support

• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for hardware and software issues.
• Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimization strategies.
• Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
• Stay updated on the latest security threats, vulnerabilities, and best practices, and the latest database technologies and trends to maintain a high level of expertise.
• Stay updated on the latest system administration technologies and trends.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience with SQL Server database administration, information security, and system administration.
• Strong proficiency in SQL Server database design, implementation, and maintenance.
• Experience with database performance tuning, optimization, and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of data warehousing and ETL processes is a plus.
• Experience with Azure RDBMS database.
• Experience with NoSQL databases is desirable.
• Experience with SAN systems and backup systems is required.
• Experience with different operating system hardening processes.
• Experience with information security software packages and tools.
• Understanding of best industry practices for Azure cloud-based security solutions.
• Strong proficiency in server administration, virtualization technologies such as VMware and Windows Server, and networking.
• Experience with cloud-based solutions and native Azure cloud services operations.
• Knowledge of scripting languages such as PowerShell and Bash for automation and configuration management.
• Experience with programming languages such as GeoPandas, Shapely, Rasterio, Fiona, Pandas, NumPy, and SciPy.
• Experience with Big Geospatial Data Processing such as Apache Spark or PySpark (geospatial extensions a plus).
• Experience with Kubernetes and microservices architecture is a plus.
• Experience with ESRI solution installations and configuration.
• Industry-standard certifications such as Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator, CompTIA A+, or Network+ are required.
• Strong understanding of information security principles, frameworks, and standards such as ISO 27001 and NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
• Proven ability to conduct vulnerability assessments and penetration testing and work closely with CICO and the ITS Team.
• Knowledge of security controls, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls.
