Role Purpose

Lead and supervise the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based anesthetic and perioperative care for pediatric patients. Diagnose, manage, and treat all patients within the scope of anesthetic services while exemplifying clinical excellence, providing leadership and training to junior medical staff, and demonstrating active involvement in research and interdisciplinary education.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care Delivery

• Provide anesthetic care including general anesthesia, all forms of neuraxial regional anesthesia, peripheral nerve blockade, intravenous and inhalational analgesia, monitored anesthesia care, and emergency airway management conforming to best current practices as defined by major western anesthesiology organizations.
• Deliver anesthetic, analgesic, and consultative care of pediatric patients in clinic, outpatient, and operative settings including routine, urgent, and emergent procedures.
• Provide pre-anesthetic and post-anesthetic consultative care, follow-up, and appropriate referrals.
• Perform pre-anesthetic informed consent discussions with patients and families and provide documentation thereof.
• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for the specialty of anesthesiology.
• Ensure continuity of care and perform clinical duties as required.
• Be accessible and available to referring physicians and allied healthcare providers.

Leadership and Supervision

• In conjunction with the Department Chair and Division Chief, identify and articulate the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Sidra Department of Anesthesiology.
• Oversee the clinical activities of junior medical staff and nurse practitioners (CRNAs) and assume responsibility for the care they provide.
• Promote mentorship and academic career development for junior team members.
• Undertake appraisals of staff as directed.
• Be a role model for other anesthesiologists and anesthesia providers in exemplary patient care, mentoring of other clinicians, and creating a fair, respectful, and equitable work environment.
• Foster a culture of learning, development, and continuous improvement across the department.
• Provide support and relief for other anesthesiologists and CRNAs as required and appropriate.

Education and Training

• Work collaboratively with Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the basic science and clinical curriculum for undergraduate medical students and surgical residents as required for an ACGME curriculum.
• Actively participate in graduate medical education and in education for nursing, technical staff, and other physicians as necessary.
• Provide bedside teaching, formal didactics, and participation in simulation training.
• Develop and deliver training programs to new employees on equipment and procedures in alignment with the department's and Sidra's training objectives and plans.
• Mentor others in the optimal utilization of electronic records.

Research and Academic Development

• Participate in clinical research projects and medical research and academic projects for the Department of Anesthesiology.
• Participate in joint programs, collaborations, and primary projects of the Department.
• Demonstrate an active interest and involvement in research through written communications and project participation.
• Engage in research development activities with a professional and applied focus in keeping with Sidra Research protocols, vision, and strategy.

Quality, Safety, and Documentation

• Provide accurate and timely quality and safety data on each patient care encounter.
• Keep excellent and complete electronic medical records.
• Provide excellent patient clinical care as informed by current standards of recognized leading western medical organizations.
• Make daily clinical decisions in the provision of excellent patient clinical care.

Operational and Administrative Duties

• Cover emergency and on-call duties as determined by the Division Chief or designee.
• Participate in clinical care at offsite locations such as Hamad General Hospital as required.
• Provide clinical services as required to maintain continuous coverage for the population, which may include rotations at partner institutions and participation in on-call roster.
• Comply with all established Sidra policies regarding admissions, consultation, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
• Practice appropriate utilization of Sidra's resources.
• Facilitate patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers in accordance with policies and regulations of the facility.
• Perform departmental duties as requested by Division leadership.
• Actively participate in departmental meetings, retreats, journal clubs, simulation activities, and other agendas.
• Participate in mandatory training and actively practice continual professional development in alignment with Sidra's professional development programs to ensure maintenance of professional licensure and accreditation.
• Participate in community outreach programs and initiatives undertaken by Sidra.
• Support, implement, and follow all Sidra, department, and divisional initiatives, policies, and procedures.
• Adhere to medical staff bylaws.
• Help lead, implement, and participate in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review process.
• Observe departmental and applicable organizational policies, procedures, regulations, and information to the Department of Surgery care team.
• Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner, communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility, and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

Collaboration and Team Engagement

• Work collaboratively with other physicians, nurses, other healthcare providers, and all other division staff to ensure that cohesive, cross-functional teams are maintained.
• Effectively interact and contribute to multidisciplinary teams required for optimal care of the pediatric patient population.
• Work cooperatively with other members of department to ensure that a high standard of patient care services is maintained.
• Communicate effectively, consistently, and in a timely manner with colleagues and other staff members.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• M.D. Degree or equivalent.
• Board certification in Anesthesiology.
• Fellowship or equivalent training in Pediatric Anesthesiology.

Experience

• Minimum 1+ years of post-board certification or fellowship training experience.

Additional Information

• The position holder will endeavor to obtain a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar.
• Clinical responsibilities may require participation in on-call roster and rotations at partner institutions such as Hamad Medical Center.
