Phlebotomist

Role Overview

Phlebotomist at NMC Royal Hospital. The role is based at the hospital and involves collecting blood specimens and supporting laboratory operations.

Role Purpose

To perform phlebotomy procedures safely and accurately while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, specimen integrity, and compliance with regulatory requirements including ISO 15189:2022, EIAC Standards, JCI, and relevant UAE health authority guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Procedures

• Perform blood draws using venipuncture, capillary, or fingerstick methods.
• Verify patient information and ensure correct labelling of samples to avoid errors.
• Collect blood specimens from patients with accuracy and precision.
• Monitor patient reactions during and after procedures for any adverse reactions and report concerns to supervisors.

Equipment and Environment

• Prepare and maintain all necessary tools and equipment to ensure they are sterile, organized, and properly functioning.
• Maintain cleanliness in work areas and equipment by following proper hygiene protocols.
• Transport specimens safely and efficiently to the appropriate laboratories for analysis.

Documentation and Communication

• Record and document patient information, procedures performed, and specimens collected accurately.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and laboratory technicians to ensure accurate and timely results.
• Demonstrate the ability to listen to others in promoting effective communication.

Safety and Compliance

• Perform assigned work ensuring that it meets all standards required by ISO 15189:2022, EIAC Standards, JCI, and regulatory bodies including DOH, DHA, and MOH where applicable.
• Adhere to all safety guidelines, including the handling and disposal of biohazard materials.
• Strictly adhere to the organization's regulations and policies, especially those related to infection control, patient safety, OSHAD, DOH, JCI, and ISO.
• Follow proper hygiene protocols and maintain cleanliness to prevent cross-contamination.

Patient Care

• Ensure a calm, safe, and comfortable environment for patients, addressing any concerns or anxieties.
• Protect patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines regarding personal health information.
• Maintain confidentiality as per the agreement signed.

Continuous Improvement and Professional Development

• Support Continuous Quality Improvement and participate and contribute to all quality assurance activities of the service.
• Participate and contribute to scheduled in-service training programs.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the hospital's policies and procedures and demonstrate respect for them.

General Operations

• Work in all shifts as scheduled by the Laboratory Director.
• Exercise effective interpersonal skills in dealings with department staff, associates, and management.
• Carry out other duties when requested by the Laboratory Director.

Qualifications & Experience

• Certificate of training in an approved phlebotomy program or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (1 year) or degree in any health-related field.
• Minimum of one (1) year practical experience as a phlebotomist in a reputed medical laboratory.
• Not less than two (2) years of medical laboratory experience.
• Currently licensed in country of origin and with DOH, DHA, or MOH license to practice in UAE.

Skills & Competencies

• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Arabic language is desirable but not essential.
• Ability to learn and handle automation and IT programs is desirable but not essential.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
