Phlebotomist

Role Overview

Phlebotomist at NMC Healthcare. The role involves collecting patient blood specimens safely and accurately for laboratory testing while following Department of Health regulations, infection-control standards, and patient-safety procedures.

Role Purpose

Collect patient blood specimens by venipuncture and microcollection techniques, ensuring accurate specimen handling, proper identification, and compliance with laboratory standards and health and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Specimen Collection

• Identify patients by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient's identification before venipuncture is performed.
• Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
• Demonstrate complete knowledge of which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed for each test.
• Know test requirements and assist in the Clinical Laboratory as needed.
• Conduct bleeding time tests and blood cultures.
• Collect blood samples according to established protocols.

Facility Management

• Look after blood collection room requirements.
• Maintain cleanliness and decorum of blood collection rooms.

Health, Environment & Safety (EHS)

• Comply with reasonable EHS instructions, safe working procedures, local regulations, departmental EHS Objectives and Targets, emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment at all times, including hand gloves, face shield, goggles, respirators, and aprons as required for the section.
• Follow all safety systems and do not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone's health and safety.
• Assist with the preparation of risk assessments.
• Report EHS hazards, incidents, near misses, and issues.
• Reduce, reuse, and recycle waste as much as possible.
• Attend all EHS trainings, awareness programs, and mock drills.
• Collect, store, and dispose of hazardous materials properly according to NMCSH Waste Management Policy.
• Demonstrate familiarity with the concept of hazardous and bio-hazardous materials and safe handling of bio-hazardous materials present in the working section.
• Demonstrate familiarity with ergonomic, sharps, and biological hazards in the work area and how to handle them.
• Demonstrate familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to determine health hazards and routes of exposure for chemicals.
• Know the CODE white policy and other applicable laboratory policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

• Valid DOH License or passed DOH Exam as Phlebotomist.
• Certificate of training in an approved Phlebotomy program, or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (1 year), or Degree in any health-related field.
• Minimum of two (2) years practical experience as Phlebotomist in a reputed Medical Laboratory.
• Currently licensed in country of origin.

Skills & Competencies

• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Arabic language is desirable but not essential.
• Ability to learn and handle automation and IT programs is desirable but not essential.
