Pharmacy Technician

Role Overview

Pharmacy Technician at American Hospital Dubai, located in Dubai. Assists pharmacists in providing quality pharmaceutical care in compliance with U.A.E. Regulations, Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) standards, and departmental procedures.

Role Purpose

To support pharmacists in delivering safe pharmaceutical care while coordinating unit dose distribution and outpatient dispensing activities. The role ensures accurate medication preparation, inventory management, and adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities

Medication Dispensing and Preparation

• Dispense medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, excluding Narcotics, Controlled and Semi Controlled medications.
• Review physician's medication orders and prescriptions, preparing medications for distribution under pharmacist supervision.
• Call the attention of a pharmacist to any observed conflicts or discrepancies in orders.
• Input physician's medication orders into Pharmacy Patient Medication Profile and maintain related records.
• Fill unit dose medication cassettes according to Patient Medication Profile.
• Generate labels and gather drugs or supplies required for pharmacists to fill prescription orders.
• Perform all prescription processing tasks required under Pharmacist supervision.
• Assist in the preparation of extemporaneous compounds and sterile products using approved procedures and techniques.

Distribution and Operations

• Exchange medication cassettes according to departmental schedule.
• Assist pharmacists in coordinating unit dose distribution and operations in the dispensing area of the inpatient and outpatient pharmacies.
• Maintain the routine pick-up and delivery of medication and, as required, the unit dose cart fill and cassette exchange process.
• Communicate with nurses and other hospital staff.

Inventory and Stock Management

• Maintain inventory levels of fast-moving repackaged medications.
• Maintain established levels of medication in the dispensing areas and replenish stock as necessary.
• Report any pending shortages or unusual movement in supplies or medications to the senior pharmacist.
• Assist in controlling expired drug products and remove them from stock.
• Assist in the monthly expired drug inspection in the dispensing area and other assigned areas.
• Coordinate the cleaning of medication cassettes regularly.

Documentation and Compliance

• Maintain all appropriate documentation and reports of drug distribution.
• Perform all duties in a professional, effective and confidential manner.
• Maintain the pharmacy and work areas in a neat, clean and orderly fashion.

Training and Analysis

• Assist in the training of Pharmacy Technician II's in the dispensing area.
• Assist with assigned drug utilization reviews, data gathering and analysis.

General Duties

• Perform other tasks as required and assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma in Pharmacy Program.
• Current active home country registration.
• Dubai Health Authority (DHA) License.
• Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
• Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology, abbreviations, and symbols.

Skills & Competencies

• High degree of accuracy in performing functions.
• Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to include all fields required in documentation.
