Role Purpose

To provide medical services for comprehensive management of patients within the scope of surgical retina specialty and granted privileges. To contribute to administration, education, and research at KAAUH while maintaining high standards of patient safety, clinical governance, and evidence-based practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with complex retinal and vitreoretinal disorders.
• Perform vitreoretinal surgical procedures and other appropriate retinal interventions.
• Evaluate and manage retinal emergencies and complex postoperative cases.
• Provide consultation for patients referred with challenging retinal conditions.
• Screen, diagnose, follow-up, and treat Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) patients.
• Deliver patient care at specialist level in accordance with delineated scope of services and granted privileges.
• Conduct consultation services, follow-up care, procedures, and on-call duties.
• Provide care across outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, emergency room, operating room, day unit, and intensive care units.
• Practice patient care in accordance with up-to-date best practices and scientific evidence.
• Practice patient care according to KAAUH quality improvement initiatives and ensure a safe healing environment.
• Empower patients and families to become active partners in their health and wellness.
• Express stewardship through accountability, appropriate resource utilization, and efficient patient care processes.

Supervision & Development

• Supervise the work of all team members under responsibility, including residents, assistant consultants, and associate consultants.
• Contribute to professional development and provide periodic performance evaluation of team members.
• Provide regular teaching to all team members, senior and junior, appropriate to their level.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

• Participate in multidisciplinary patient care and clinical decision-making.
• Actively contribute to KAAUH partnership opportunities and collaborations.
• Collaborate with other hospital departments as required.

Administration & Governance

• Undertake administrative duties as required, particularly in association with patient care, quality assurance, and improvement.
• Develop Clinical Management Guidelines, Clinical Pathways, and Evidence-Based Best Practices.
• Contribute to audits, peer reviews, and morbidity and mortality rounds.
• Execute administrative requirements, tasks, or duties for development of division, department, or hospital as deemed necessary by supervising consultant, head, chairman, executive director, or chief executive officer.
• Manage procurement requirements and participate in recruitment of medical staff and manpower planning.
• Develop policies and procedures, improve processes, and develop department manuals.
• Serve as member of committees as assigned.
• Have a practical understanding of KAAUH Mission, Vision, Values, Bylaws, Code of Ethics, Code of Professional Conduct, and all related Policies and Procedures.

Education & Research

• Participate in general undergraduate and post-graduate teaching activities based on related rules and regulations.
• Participate in educational activities such as Grand Rounds, Journal Club, and daily morning meetings.
• Contribute to teaching, training, and supervision of residents and fellows.
• Take advantage of continuing professional development events at KAAUH.
• Ensure maintenance of CME recertification requirements.
• Ensure minimal requirements and knowledge to conduct scientific research.
• Participate in research activities within department and hospital.
• Work towards having scientific publications.

• Provide patient and family education related to health learning needs.
• Respect patients and their families to promote a patient-centered care culture.

Qualifications & Experience

• Board certification or equivalent qualification in Ophthalmology.
• Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Vitreoretinal Surgery / Surgical Retina.
• Appropriate professional registration and licensing to practice in Saudi Arabia.
• Demonstrated experience in vitreoretinal surgery and management of complex retinal disease.
• Experience in ROP screening and management.
