Laser Technician - RN

Role Overview

Laser Technician - RN at NMC Healthcare. The post holder will always work within the scope of practice, putting the health, wellbeing and safety of their patient first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate their needs.

Role Purpose

To deliver specialized laser treatment and skincare services as a registered nurse with advanced training in dermatology and laser technology, while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, clinical excellence, and professional practice.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Care Planning

• Perform systematic patient assessment, reassessment and collection of pertinent data about the patient's health or situation.
• Understand and analyse assessment information and data.
• Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
• Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
• Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders.
• Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment.

Laser & Dermatology Practice

• Deliver competent physical documented assessment using all sources to hand including observation and communication to prepare appropriate treatment for a patient's skin care needs based on good clinical knowledge, experience, and consultation with a Dermatologist/Physician.
• Operate trained and competent use of laser machines for the purpose of hair removal as recognized by the certification of the Dermatologists in NMC.
• Provide up-to-date and sanctioned knowledge and empathic support for clients who wish to, or those who need to undergo hair removal treatment including permanent hair reduction, laser skin resurfacing and vascular lesions with the Dermatologist, and laser tattoo removal.
• Provide treatment and care of skin pre and post procedure and surgery including the identification of wounds, types and stages of healing and the necessity of informing and working with medical practitioners should the case indicate.
• Provide treatment and care of facial skin to maintain and improve its appearance, including understanding about the sun and its effect on the skin.
• Provide pain relief and stress reduction and anxiety reduction techniques prior to procedures provided by a dermatologist, based on competence.

Documentation & Education

• Ensure timely and accurate documentation of all procedures including detailed informed consents, and patient education regarding equipment and skin care protocols.
• Support patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
• Support the nurse educator with training programs, training needs analysis within the specialised field.
• Develop and maintain a learning culture amongst nurses, particularly in the specialist field in which they work.

Clinical Governance & Quality

• Support and lead audit and data collection in their area of specialisation for KPIs and benchmarking.
• Be a role model and always seek to improve the safety and quality of care delivered to patients in the specialist field.
• Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.

Interprofessional Practice & Support

• Be a member of the interprofessional team as a subject matter expert in his/her field of specialization.
• Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.
• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope such as but not limited to Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation.
• Assist in medical procedures invasive or non-invasive as needed.
• Support the process of safe patient admission, transfer and discharge.
• Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.

Qualifications & Experience

• Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates.
• Hold a post-graduate specialist qualification, diploma, degree, or masters in the specialty.
• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
• Have previous experience within the specialist field.
• Have completed the relevant competencies within the specialist field.
• Be an expert registered nurse with advanced education, training or certification in their specialized area of practice.

• Communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written).
• Demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge and expertise in dermatology and laser technology.
• Perform competent physical assessment and clinical decision-making.
• Provide empathic patient support and education.
• Work competently with laser machines for hair removal, skin resurfacing and related procedures.

Additional Information

• Manage their own professional re-licensure.
• Be willing to work across departments when necessary.
