Lab Instructor - Engineering (Industrial)

Role Overview

Lab Instructor - Engineering (Industrial) at Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT). This is a combined instruction and hands-on role delivering lectures and laboratory support to Diploma level courses while maintaining HCT laboratories and workshops.

Role Purpose

To provide effective instruction and assessment to Diploma level courses and maintain HCT laboratories and workshops. The role encompasses lecture delivery, installation, demonstration, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and facilities, with the instructor working closely with faculty and students in laboratories and workshops.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Assessment

• Deliver lectures and assessments to Diploma level courses in addition to lab duties.
• Develop and utilize various educational technology resources to ensure that effective and innovative instruction methodologies are employed.
• Demonstrate the use of machines, tools and equipment within the lab.
• Provide teaching assistance to Engineering Technology Faculty during workshop and laboratory sessions.
• Perform teaching duties as required.

Laboratory Operations & Maintenance

• Assist in the development of labs and operational condition and maintenance of teaching equipment.
• Receive, install and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Maintain a schedule of preventative maintenance for all equipment and keep adequate manuals and maintenance logs for equipment and parts.
• Maintain consumable materials store and ensure adequate inventory levels for supplies.
• Set up the laboratory in preparation for experiments and maintain supplies and documentation.

Equipment & Student Support

• Support Faculty and students in using machines, tools and equipment within the laboratory.
• Support Faculty and students in resourcing and implementation phase of student projects, as required.
• Demonstrate the use of machines, tools and equipment within the lab.
• Aid staff and students in the purchasing procedures with regards to equipment and parts for student projects.

Safety & Compliance

• Observe and reinforce safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol within the laboratory.
• Contribute to the development of HCT by observing and implementing college and system-wide policies and procedures.

Financial & Administrative Coordination

• Follow through the financial aspects with the finance department concerning purchases for projects.
• Coordinate with other Engineering Programs.
• Travel to other HCT colleges to attend meetings, workshops and conferences as required.

Leadership & Development

• Review work on a regular basis and provide constructive feedback.
• Delegate tasks to subordinates and encourage them to take initiative within their scope of responsibilities.
• Advise and guide others by sharing experiences and discussing how to deal with various matters.
• Coach the team and counsel them on improving their performance, system and process knowledge.
• Develop others through identifying development opportunities.
• Take on a role of mentor and guide employees in their long-term career goals and set plans to achieve them.
• Contribute in an effective and efficient manner to the development of UAE Nationals.
• A demonstrated willingness to engage in professional development activities to develop and improve new and current skills and to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization.

• Analyze and comprehend operational organizational goals and strategies and how they relate to own function.
• Generate ideas which contribute to the development of functional goals.
• Identify opportunities to enhance the implementation of operational goals.
• Adapt to business continuation practices and approaches developed to protect and restore HCT resources and adjust best to the changing environment in times of any major change or crisis to maintain a responsible and positive environment for the organization and the community as a whole.

Additional Duties

• Serve as a student advisor as assigned.
• Develop an awareness and respect for the customs and cultures of HCT students and employees.
• Participate in extra-curricular activities and community events.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Team Leader.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Minimum of a Master's degree.

Professional Membership

• Membership to a relevant internationally recognized professional association is desirable.

Training & Certification

• Training certificates or diplomas in workshop practices is desirable.

Work Experience

• Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
• Preference will be given to candidates with Industrial experience in the relevant engineering field.
• Previous short span teaching experience is desirable.

Skills & Competencies

• English proficiency is essential.
• Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
• Advanced computer literacy is required to integrate technology in the workplace.
• Strong troubleshooting and technical problem-solving skills.
