Role Overview
Lab Assistant - Applied Media at Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), providing hands-on support to faculty and students within the Applied Media program.
Role Purpose
The Applied Media Lab Assistant maintains the college's laboratories and workshops, providing technical support to faculty and students. The role encompasses installation, demonstration, maintenance and troubleshooting of technical equipment and facilities, along with audio visual support and AV control room oversight at college events.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Support
- Provide assistance to Applied Media Faculty during workshop and laboratory sessions.
- Demonstrate the use of machines, tools and equipment within the lab.
- Support faculty and students in the design, planning and execution of student projects as required.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of teaching materials.
Equipment Management
- Receive, install and maintain lab equipment and supplies.
- Maintain a schedule of preventative maintenance for all equipment.
- Keep adequate manuals and maintenance logs for equipment and parts.
- Maintain systems and procedures to track borrowed equipment and tools.
- Perform installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of audio visual and post-production systems and equipment.
Inventory & Resource Control
- Control the distribution of consumable materials and ensure adequate inventory levels for supplies within the lab.
Safety & Compliance
- Observe and reinforce safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol within the lab.
- Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory health and safety protocol.
Audio Visual Support
- Provide audio visual support at college events as required.
- Oversee the AV control room at college events.
Organizational Contribution
- Contribute to the development of HCT by observing and implementing College and system-wide policies and procedures.
- Participate in extra-curricular activities and community events.
- Travel to other HCT colleges to attend meetings, workshops and conferences as required.
- Develop an awareness of and respect for the customs and cultures of HCT students and employees.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum Higher Diploma with 3 years relevant hands-on experience in broadcasting, media production, or an education facility focused on production.
- Preferred: Bachelor Degree with 2 years of relevant experience in broadcasting, media production, or an education facility focused on production.
- Demonstrated understanding of broadcasting networks and previous experience in AV areas.
- Previous teaching assistant experience is desirable.
Skills & Competencies
- Experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting audio visual and post-production systems and equipment.
- Practical workshop skills as evident by knowledge of technical instruments, software, workshop tools and other technical equipment.
- Experience in the acquisition and maintenance of standard Applied Media equipment and tools.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- High degree of computer literacy and demonstrated ability to integrate technology in the workplace.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated competency to interact with people at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multi-cultural environment and to cope with pressure in a positive manner while working to deadlines within a busy and demanding environment.
- Demonstrated willingness to engage in professional development activities in order to develop and improve new and current skills, and to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
