Role Purpose

To provide comprehensive support for individual pupils with additional needs, enabling full participation in classroom and school activities. The role bridges academic, physical, emotional, and behavioural support while promoting independence and working closely with teachers and external professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support & Participation

• Provide support for individual pupils within group contexts or individually, both inside and outside the classroom to enable full participation in a range of activities during the school day.
• Support individual pupils in relation to their additional support needs including academic, physical, emotional, and behavioural difficulties.
• Supervise individual pupils in the classroom, specialist lessons, and other locations.
• Keep individual pupils and peers on task.
• Promote independence by teaching clear and meaningful strategies to the student.

Academic & Instructional Support

• Assist in the implementation of individual education programmes for individual pupils, linking to the student's IEP goals and contributing to the monitoring of their progress and attainment.
• Provide academic assistance.
• Give individual instruction as prescribed by the teacher; provide group instruction where appropriate.
• Demonstrate various instructional activities.
• Monitor work assigned by the teacher, checking and correcting individual students' work in line with school policy while in progress.
• Prepare materials for the individual as needed to scaffold their classroom learning.
• Prepare necessary resources to assist the identified student to access or differentiate the curriculum to support learning.
• Praise and reinforce the achievements of pupils; report pupil progress to the teacher.

Communication & Collaboration

• Build a close working relationship with homeroom and subject teachers and communicate regularly and openly.
• Work with other professionals such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and others as needed.
• Adhere to guidelines of confidentiality, respecting that the Head of Inclusion, homeroom and subject teachers are responsible for formal communications with parents.

Therapy & Intervention Delivery

• Attend and subsequently deliver intervention for SaLT (Speech and Language Therapy), OT (Occupational Therapy), and ABA therapy to help generalise and consolidate target skills, maximising the impact of therapy.

Behavioural & Social Development

• Help develop pupils' social and communication skills.
• Participate in development of behaviour policy; promote pupils' self-esteem and discipline misbehaviour in line with whole school policy.

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
• Support the aims of the school, comply with the requirements of health and safety, code of conduct and other relevant legislation and school policies.
• Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance.

Professional Development & Administration

• Assist homeroom and subject teachers with maintaining pupil records.
• Attend training sessions and professionals' meetings as required.
• Attend ECA (Extended Co-curricular Activities), trips, and visits.
• Experienced IA may be asked to mentor new IA; new IA may be asked to participate in mentoring.
• Understand other duties from time to time as the principal or Head of Inclusion require.

Qualifications & Experience

• SEN (Special Educational Needs) qualification – Diploma minimum.
• Minimum 2 years SEN experience.
