Role Overview

Faculty in Maritime Logistics & Supply Chain Management at Sharjah Maritime Academy. This is a research and teaching position requiring expertise in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance, and related maritime disciplines.

Company Overview

Sharjah Maritime Academy is an applied, industry-oriented institution. The role will work closely with the Dean of Research and Faculty Development and the Head of Department to support the implementation of the Academy's research strategy and contribute to its teaching obligations.

Role Purpose

Deliver a high-quality research portfolio in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, and related maritime disciplines while contributing to postgraduate teaching, research methods instruction, dissertation supervision, and applied research activities. Support an excellent educational experience for Bachelor's and Master's students and advance Sharjah Maritime Academy's research strategy and strategic research priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching

• Develop, implement, and evaluate educationally effective teaching and assessment materials in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Research Methods, and Applied Research.
• Teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Research Methods, Applied Research, and related research methodology.
• Supervise dissertation, thesis, and capstone project work.
• Set and mark coursework, examinations, and other assessment tasks in a timely fashion with clear and supportive feedback to students at an appropriate standard.
• Provide pastoral support to students at all levels of study, referring them on for further help and guidance as necessary.
• Deliver a maximum of 2 credit hours teaching per term.
• Support supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses for the equivalent of 1 credit hour per term.
• Hold an appropriate higher education teaching qualification such as FHEA or similar, or commit to undertaking such at the earliest opportunity.

Research

• Deliver a plan for personal research over the next five years in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance, or related maritime disciplines.
• Include writing applications for substantial research funding that enables research ambitions to be delivered.
• For appointment at Professor, be an established international leader in your research field.
• For appointment at Associate Professor, establish international leadership in your research field within the next 5 years.
• Carry out independent research and contribute as a team member to collective programmes of research in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance, and related maritime disciplines.
• Generate and disseminate high-quality research outputs that are likely to achieve impact.
• Lead in making direct, measurable and positive contributions to Sharjah Maritime Academy's returns on the MoHESR KPIs, in particular those in Pillar #4.
• Publish at least 2 Class A publications per year.
• Submit in the first year at least 1 application for external funding, including an industry and an international academic partner, with meaningful and measurable student involvement.
• Actively build and contribute to leadership of networks of contacts with appropriate bodies external to the University, including relevant industry employers, policymakers and charities.
• Secure industry collaboration and involvement in your own research and that of Bachelor and Master students, in support of Sharjah Maritime Academy as an applied, industry-oriented institution.
• Actively contribute to Sharjah Maritime Academy's research themes, which include Maritime Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business & Finance, Sustainability & Governance, and Technology including Smart Ports, Digital Shipping, Maritime Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, and Digital Transformation.
• Engage and enable research and impact beyond academia.
• Build leadership in research and scholarly literature in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance, and related maritime disciplines.
• Contribute to relevant national and international conferences, workshops, colloquia, and professional forums, with expectations of leadership in these activities for appointment to Associate Professor.

Development

• Contribute, as directed by senior management, to organisational and administrative tasks within Sharjah Maritime Academy.
• Monitor and, where appropriate, manage teaching and research resources including time, materials, finance, equipment, and laboratory effectively.
• Consistently act with collegiality, actively taking on administrative duties and participating fully in the daily working life of the Faculty.
• Behave as a role model for others.
• Self-manage, with appropriate support and guidance, the time demands of scholarship, teaching and research.
• Actively seek to contribute to the College, Department, Faculty and University strategies.
• Actively contribute to Faculty development and capacity building, including by mentoring and guiding less experienced colleagues.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• PhD in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, Maritime Finance, International Maritime Law, or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum 10 years of academic experience after completing a PhD, currently holding the position of Associate Professor or higher, or an equivalent academic rank at a recognized institution.
• Academic standing and credibility, including success in winning and delivering major grants, internationally excellent research outputs, impact case studies, impactful innovation activities, and expertise in Maritime Logistics, Maritime Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business and related disciplines.
• Effective and significant academic leadership on matters related to research and innovation, with demonstrated experience in Maritime Logistics, Maritime Supply Chain Management, Maritime Business, or related fields.
• Track record of internationally competitive independent research and plans providing evidence of a trajectory towards international leadership.
• Leading significant publications in high-impact academic journals in maritime logistics, supply chain management, maritime business, maritime finance and maritime sustainability.
• For appointment at Associate Professor: at least 4 Scopus-indexed papers in the last 3 years, including at least 2 related to maritime business and maritime sustainability.
• For appointment at Professor: at least 7 Scopus-indexed papers in the last 5 years, including at least 4 related to maritime business and maritime sustainability.
• Track record in independent leadership in attracting grant funding.
• For appointment at Associate Professor: significant contribution to at least 3 externally funded projects, including at least 1 related to maritime business and maritime sustainability.
• For appointment at Professor: lead investigator on at least 3 externally funded projects, including at least 2 related to maritime business and maritime sustainability.
• Experience of effective teaching and supervision in higher education, including successful supervision of Master and/or PhD student(s).
• Contribution to broader organisational and management processes.

Preferred

• Recognised qualification for teaching in Higher Education.
• Relevant industry body affiliation and membership.
• Familiarity with the UAE's Higher Education landscape, including CAA initiatives, policies and practices.

Additional Information

The workload distribution is 80% research and 20% teaching.
