Role Overview

Faculty in Maritime Business at Sharjah Maritime Academy, located in Sharjah, UAE. This is a Lecturer – Assistant Professor position within the growing Maritime Business program.

Role Purpose

Deliver specialist teaching in maritime business to inspire and prepare the next generation of professionals in the maritime industry. Combine strong teaching skills with applied research and industry engagement, delivering courses that bridge theory and practice in one of the UAE's most dynamic sectors. Contribute to shaping future leaders in global shipping and logistics.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Course Delivery

• Teach a set of subjects including Chartering, Commercial Ship Management, Maritime Business, and Marine Insurance & Finance across all types of degree and diploma levels as directed by the Head.
• Deliver lectures and lead seminar groups using appropriate, innovative and effective pedagogic approaches.
• Deliver courses in other departments as required by the Line Manager.

Assessment & Student Feedback

• Participate in the examination and assessment process including setting papers, preparing marking schemes, and agreeing marks with other staff.
• Use appropriate and innovative forms of assessment practices to enhance learning and teaching.
• Provide timely, constructive, formative and comprehensive feedback to students using all forms of communication.

Research & Professional Development

• Conduct research for career development, aligning with the Academy's ambition to be a research-active institution.
• Maintain and update own discipline knowledge to develop research-informed teaching.
• Bring latest research-based knowledge into the classroom.

Institutional Engagement

• Assist Head of Maritime Business Program as required to fulfil the Academy's strategic priorities.
• Contribute to program and institutional quality assurance, academic advising, and committee work.
• Ensure full compliance with the requirements of the timetable and the annual academic calendar.

Additional Duties

• Be willing to travel as required and occasionally work outside of standard working hours as specified in the contract.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• PhD in a relevant subject such as Maritime Business, Shipping & International Trade (Essential)
• Recognised qualification for teaching in Higher Education (Preferred)

Professional Background

• Experience of teaching in the field of Maritime Business, including Chartering, Commercial Ship Management & Operations (Essential)
• Experience of working in maritime business and commercial ship management (Preferred)
• Industry body affiliation or membership (Preferred)

Research & Academic Leadership

• Evidence of research outputs, winning funds and creating impact from research (Preferred)
• Educational experience with leading courses and programs, revising course content, developing new programs and courses (Preferred)

Regulatory & Systems Knowledge

• Familiarity with CAA standards, quality assurance, and accreditation requirements in the UAE (Preferred)
• Familiarity with learning technologies including LMS, online assessment, and academic integrity tools (Preferred)

Skills & Competencies

• Ability to fluently speak, write and communicate in English at the highest level of professionalism
• Ability to integrate theory and practice through case studies, simulations, and applied research
• Team player, approachable, sensitive towards all cultures
• Work as and when required under pressure with the intention to complete tasks as promptly and efficiently as possible
