Engineering Technician

Role Overview

Engineering Technician at IHG Hotels & Resorts. The role provides day-to-day maintenance of hotel facilities under the direction of engineering management to ensure all equipment remains in good repair with minimal downtime.

Role Purpose

Ensure that guest rooms, public areas, and all hotel systems and equipment are maintained in safe and efficient operating condition. Support continuous improvement of engineering services to guests and associates while acting as a liaison between engineering and all other hotel departments.

Key Responsibilities

Systems Operation & Maintenance

• Understand and operate advanced electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and boiler systems.
• Maintain guest rooms and public areas by plunging toilets, unclogging drains, and repairing hardware, plumbing, and electrical equipment including lamps, air conditioners, and cosmetic items.
• Monitor and maintain fire alarm and life safety systems; remain fully informed of system operation.
• Work with fire sprinkler and emergency power systems.
• Maintain mechanical and electrical plant and equipment in excellent working condition.

Tools & Equipment Management

• Clean, lubricate, protect, and maintain all tools and equipment in the hotel.
• Ensure all tools used are returned to the shop and secured in proper storage.
• Protect and maintain assigned tool pouch and its tools at the discretion of engineering management.

Preventive Maintenance & Inspections

• Carry out the Preventive Maintenance Program as per schedule.
• Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and overhauling as stipulated.
• Attend to maintenance requests issued by concerned departments.
• Ensure assigned projects are completed within designated timeframes.

Monitoring, Readings & Records

• Read, log, track, and interpret readings from meters, gauges, and other measuring units.
• Maintain a thorough log of each day's activities and problems that occur.
• Ensure information is passed on to other shifts.
• Take readings of electric, water, and LPG meters for night shift duty.
• Take swimming pool readings three times a day.

Fire Safety & Emergency Response

• Act quickly to pre-warning or fire alarm by proceeding to the exact location, checking the situation, and reporting at once to the immediate supervisor.
• Be available for any emergencies and act in an engineering capacity to protect guests and associates and preserve the building and its systems.
• Act as quickly and responsibly as possible to return the building to normal operating status and inform supervisors of emergencies.
• Maintain working knowledge of all emergency procedures, including fire response, emergency medical procedures, bomb threat plan, water leak emergency procedures, gas leak procedures, electrical failure procedures, and elevator procedures.

Energy Conservation

• Observe and analyze energy and utilities usage in the hotel and on the grounds.
• Identify ways to conserve energy and report ideas to the engineering department.

Safety & Accident Prevention

• Be aware of all existing departmental Job Safety Analysis.
• Strive to work in an accident-free manner and create a safe work environment for others.
• Continuously look for conditions that may endanger associates or guests and take immediate action to correct any hazardous conditions found.
• Ensure safe work practices are adopted at all times and report any occupational health and safety concerns immediately to your direct manager or HR Manager.
• Achieve zero injury and accident by implementing safety procedures without compromise.

Shift Handover & Procedures

• Follow proper shift taking over and handing over procedures.
• Read, learn, understand, and refer to Standard Operating Procedures.

Interdepartmental Liaison & Communication

• Serve as liaison between Front Office, Housekeeping, Security, Health Club, Kitchen, and other departments within the hotel.
• Communicate effectively with all other departments.
• Maintain communication and give feedback with immediate supervisor to ensure that all needed materials, tools, and supplies are available or on order.
• Follow up on any items that may be on back order.
• Maintain an efficient communication platform.

Training & Development

• Help train new hires and on-the-job trainees.
• Provide training and technical advice to other engineers as needed or requested.
• Set an example of continuous self-development.
• Attend daily assignment sheets given by immediate supervisor.

Quality & Operational Excellence

• Complete all work assigned in a safe and professional manner.
• Operate as an independent mechanic by analyzing problems, identifying courses of action, and implementing solutions with available resources to a high degree of quality.
• Keep working areas clean and well organized.
• Keep accurate completion and task records in project files.
• Maintain a professional and organized work environment.
• Identify opportunities to innovate service delivery and product offering to meet and exceed client expectations.
• Monitor guest satisfaction feedback.
• Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Assistant Chief Engineer.

Compliance & Knowledge

• Maintain a working knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
• Attend meetings, training sessions, and any other required meeting or training session.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• High School graduate or equivalent vocational training certificate.

Experience

• Two years previous experience in a similar role.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

• Understand and operate advanced electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and boiler systems.
• Ability to read and understand test equipment, measuring devices, and safety manuals.
• Read and understand blueprints, schematic drawings, and technical parts breakdown.
