Engineer Biomedical

Role Overview

Engineer Biomedical at NMC Healthcare. The role ensures uninterrupted and proper running of all medical and biomedical equipment in the hospital.

Role Purpose

The Engineer Biomedical provides domain expertise, technical support, and maintenance oversight for all biomedical equipment across the hospital. The position combines equipment procurement input, hands-on maintenance and repair, staff training, contractor coordination, safety compliance, and data management to sustain clinical operations and equipment reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Procurement & Planning

• Provide domain knowledge input during the pre-purchase stage of all biomedical equipment.

Equipment Receiving & Inventory

• Perform inspection, inventory procedures and machine marking for incoming new equipment prior to use.
• Maintain a regularly updated inventory of all biomedical equipment in the hospital.

Preventive Maintenance & Operations

• Carry out regular rounds and proper, systematic preventive maintenance of all biomedical equipment and ensure that problems are rectified immediately.
• Maintain hand tools, portable machines and equipment in good working order at all times.
• Ensure use and maintenance of soldering equipment as per the manufacturer's specifications.

Technical Support & Training

• Provide technical assistance, training and instruction to staff in the maintenance and operation of equipment.
• Interpret engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams and graphic illustrations utilizing clinical, physiologic and electronic principles.

Troubleshooting & Repair

• Analyze equipment for failure, faults or malfunctions based on application of test instruments and reference to technical literature and schematics.
• Provide engineering and technical advice to ensure compliance with electrical and other safety standards and prepare reports as required.

Contractor & Vendor Management

• Coordinate and evaluate the work performed by service contractors to include maintenance, calibration, installation and verification of service documentation.
• Manage vendor relationships and development with particular reference to vendors who can repair PCBs and major assemblies that companies ask to replace at high costs.

Documentation & Records

• Prepare and enter data in logs, reports, databases, forms and equipment records concerning inspections, repairs and equipment condition and operation.
• Collect monitoring data for the medical equipment management program.
• Prepare requisitions for spare parts procurement from stores or manufacturer.

Safety & Risk Management

• Conduct and assess safety and risk assessment together with the FMS teams and develop measures to counter them.
• Adhere to the safety norms of the hospital and follow both patient safety and staff safety rules.

Governance & Coordination

• Liaison with other departments and higher management.
• As a member of the FMS committee, actively contribute to develop manuals, policies and procedures relevant to the biomedical department.
• Develop and coordinate departmental quality initiatives.

Compliance & Professional Development

• Update biomedical knowledge by attending seminars and workshops regarding new equipment.
• Perform other related duties as and when assigned by the Medical Administrator.

Occupational Safety & Health (OSH)

• Familiarize, comply and implement OSHAD-SF and NMCSH Al Ain Internal OSHMS policies, procedures and SOPs relevant to the department.
• Notify and report all OSHMS hazards, incidents, accidents and near misses within the premises of NMCSH Al Ain to the supervisor or department OSH Facilitator as per the incident reporting protocol.
• Assist with the preparation of departmental risk assessment activities and implement control measures within the timeframe.
• Attend applicable department OSHMS training.
• Comply with all OSH instructions, safe working procedures and signages within the premises of NMCSH Al Ain.
• Familiarize yourself with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Refrain from willfully or recklessly endangering anyone's health and safety.
• Make proper use of all machinery, tools, substances, safety systems and Personal Protective Equipment provided for use at work.
• Participate in required OSH inspection, audit and OSH monitoring programs.
• Comply with OSHAD SF COP 49.0 Compressed Gases and Air.
• Comply and carry out work as per the related SOP of OSHAD-SF/OSHMS NMCSH, programs and targets.
• Refrain from tampering or misusing NMCSH Al Ain equipment and property.

Business Continuity Planning (BCP)

• Achieve an adequate level of general awareness regarding business continuity.
• Be aware of the contents of service area disaster recovery plan and any specific roles or responsibilities allocated.
• Participate actively in the business continuity programme when required.
• Ensure information governance standards continue to be applied to data and information during an incident.

Health Information & Data Security

• Adhere to information systems policies and procedures as required by Health Care Organization Privacy and Confidentiality of Health Information.
• Follow security and privacy policies and procedures for the use of networks, including intranet and Internet.
• Follow confidentiality and security measures to protect electronic health information.
• Maintain data integrity and validity within an information system.
• Report any possible breaches of confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies.
• Apply departmental and organizational data and information system security policies.

Computer & Digital Skills

• Use basic word processing, spreadsheet and desktop presentation applications as applicable to your work.
• Demonstrate proficiency in Windows operating environment.
• Demonstrate use of email, addressing, forwarding, attachments and netiquette.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) or Master of Applied Science in Bio-Medical Instrumentation or equivalent degree or fellowship.
• Two years of experience in maintenance involving applications, preferably in Medical Electronics.
• Good knowledge of English to read and understand technical literature and schematics.

Skills & Competencies

• Computer skills including Word and Excel.
• Proficiency in Windows operating environment.
• Understanding of clinical, physiologic and electronic principles.
• Technical interpretation of engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams and graphic illustrations.
• Application of test instruments and reference materials.
