Role Purpose
The Emergency Services Dispatcher functions primarily as a call-taker telecommunicator, receiving and recording requests for Fire and Emergency Services responses, and dispatching emergency personnel to critical situations under the supervision of the Emergency Dispatcher Lead.
Key Responsibilities
Call-Taking and Dispatch Operations
- Receive, record, and effectively manage requests for Fire and Emergency Services responses.
- Dispatch emergency personnel to situations requiring critical response.
- Read posted orders to ascertain personnel requirements.
Personnel and Assignment Management
- Notify personnel of work assignments and changes in instructions by telephone or radio.
- Post assignment information on dispatch board.
- Contact emergency personnel to verify assignment locations.
Equipment and Support
- Issue regular and special equipment to emergency personnel as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
Education and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; copy of diploma must be provided.
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Proboard Telecommunicator II certification.
- International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Proboard Hazardous Materials Awareness certification.
Experience
- Minimum two (2) years experience as a Fire Department Emergency Service Dispatcher.
Skills & Competencies
- Communicate clearly on the radio and telephone.
- Record, transmit, and report information accurately.
- Read, write, and speak English fluently.
Additional Information
Working Conditions
- Capable of working in extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions, including hot, dry, desert environment with average temperatures of 30 degrees in winter and 130 degrees in summer months.
- Includes some industrial production environment conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Light work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- If use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) use required for some situations, including head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
- Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
