Role Purpose

The Duty Engineer plans, manages, and oversees all preventative maintenance work, new projects, extensions, and renovations for the resort. The role ensures compliance with all statutory and legal requirements for fire, health and safety, manages department operations in the absence of the Chief Engineer, and optimizes energy efficiency while maintaining the highest service standards expected in luxury hospitality.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance Management

• Plan and manage all preventative maintenance work, new projects, extensions, and renovations.
• Ensure that all maintenance requests are prioritized and dealt with efficiently by technically proficient and guest-friendly technicians.
• Monitor and respond quickly to guest-room engineering complaints and emergencies.
• Carry out maintenance work while minimizing disruption to guests.
• Maintain engineering logbooks and adhere to hotel preventive-maintenance schedules.

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Comply with all statutory and legal requirements for fire, health and safety licensing.
• Provide all necessary safety equipment required for work to be carried out efficiently and safely.
• Advise colleagues on Health & Safety rules and processes.
• Maintain knowledge of occupational health and safety, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
• Ensure awareness of relevant local building, electrical, environmental, and fire-safety regulations.

Operations & Department Leadership

• Manage the department in the absence of the Chief Engineer.
• Coordinate with Housekeeping, Front Office, Security, Food & Beverage, and other hotel departments.
• Ensure familiarity with the operations and priorities of all other hotel operating departments.

Energy Management

• Continually monitor the responsible use of energy in the hotel.
• Implement measures resulting in energy cost savings.
• Maintain familiarity with energy management and utility monitoring.

Special Projects

• Perform related duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Building Services Engineering.
• Certification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (ideal).
• Experience in luxury hotels and resorts.
• Relevant technical certifications in HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing, or building maintenance (beneficial).

Skills & Competencies

• Good knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, water supply, drainage, and mechanical systems.
• Understanding of chillers, boilers, pumps, generators, AHUs, FCUs, BMS, elevators, and fire & life-safety systems.
• Ability to read technical drawings, electrical diagrams, and equipment manuals.
• Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Basic knowledge of building automation and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork.
• Ability to remain calm during breakdowns and emergencies.
• Attention to detail and strong safety awareness.
• Good time management and ability to prioritize urgent maintenance requests.
• Professional appearance and a guest-focused attitude.
• Understanding of the high service standards expected in luxury hotels and resorts.
