Role Overview

Division Chief - Endocrinology at Sidra Medicine. The Division Chief reports to the Executive Chair - Medicine and provides clinical, education, research and executive management leadership in Endocrinology.

Role Purpose

The Division Chief is a clinical and managerial leader working with the Sidra executive team to develop and deliver strategy and business plans. The role is accountable for resources and performance in Endocrinology, integrating research and education priorities into a program of excellent clinical service delivery, specialized outpatient clinical services including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for complex and complicated cases, consultations and case management, and other associated clinical and academic activities. The Division Chief continues with personal clinical education and research activities in a reduced and modified manner.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Planning

• Identify and articulate the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division of Endocrinology.
• Collaborate on the implementation of strategies to achieve divisional vision and objectives.
• Drive the strategic plan for the division and contribute towards the strategic plan of the department.
• Lead clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for outpatient and inpatient Endocrinology services.
• Implement the clinical service strategies and business plan for the Endocrinology Division.
• Support the development of Sidra as a world-class regional center.

Budget & Financial Management

• Take decisions related to budgeting and budget controlling mechanisms for the Endocrinology Division.
• Manage and control the budget for the division.
• Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the Endocrinology Division.
• Make recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participate in the evaluation of products for use by division members to ensure their safety and efficacy.

Staffing & Human Resources

• Make decisions impacting recruitment and management of staff in the division.
• Coach, mentor and monitor staff performance.
• Promote leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote recruitment, retention, and the mission of excellence for the medical staff.
• Collaborate with other Division Chiefs to execute staff management strategies.
• Recommend clinical privileges, appointment, reappointment and corrective action for each member of the Division of Endocrinology.
• Promote mentorship and academic career development for staff members.
• Work with the Chair - Pediatrics to establish and update work week standards for all physicians and staff.
• Assure appropriate clinical coverage for all patients requiring medical care from the Endocrinology Division, including emergency care.

Clinical Governance & Compliance

• Ensure that staff of the Endocrinology Division provides services in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the Joint Commission International, Qatar Supreme Council of Health, and all other applicable regulatory bodies.
• Continue surveillance of professional performance of all individuals in the Endocrinology Division who have delineated clinical privileges.
• Conduct ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations (OPPE and FPPE).
• Continue surveillance of patient care and professional performance of all individuals in the Endocrinology Division who have defined clinical privileges.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide support provision of services to the Endocrinology Clinic services.
• In conjunction with the Clinical Service Chief, ensure the implementation of robust clinical governance structures and processes to ensure patient safety.
• Set and achieve targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws of the State of Qatar.

Quality & Improvement

• Set and achieve targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided.
• Initiate actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives.
• Identify and coordinate resolution of problems to improve physician utilization and patient satisfaction.
• Develop and maintain appropriate systems of communication between Sidra and other providers of primary and advanced care in Qatar for the purpose of individual patient care and systemic safety and quality improvement.

Education & Research

• Support decisions related to educational, clinical and research activities of the Endocrinology Division.
• In conjunction with the Chief Research Officer and division heads of research, ensure a program of clinical and translational research is developed, promoted and delivered within the Endocrinology Division.
• In conjunction with the Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar, ensure there is an active and continuous program of undergraduate teaching within the Endocrinology Division.
• Ensure an effective learning environment for students, residents, and medical staff.
• Involve in research, graduate teaching, and publication in higher impact refereed journals.
• Advise fellows and students and participate in academic services.

Technology & Operations

• Ensure all members of the Endocrinology Division optimize the use of electronic medical records.
• Responsible for all administrative activities of the Endocrinology Division unless otherwise provided for by the hospital.

Committees & Governance

• Serve on all requested committees including the Medical Executive Committee.
• Appoint committees as necessary to conduct the function of the department.

Stakeholder & Relationship Management

• Ensure effective communication with and involvement of all staff within the Endocrinology Division regarding key decisions and initiatives.
• Work collaboratively with other service chiefs, chief officers, and executive directors to achieve broad Sidra objectives.
• Initiate, implement and oversee programs designed to foster positive relations between Endocrinology physicians and the hospital operations and administration.
• Assist with marketing strategies to inform physicians and their staff of Sidra's clinical diagnostic procedures, services and resources.
• Promote and evaluate physician community outreach programs as appropriate.
• Develop, manage and support physician and community relationships.
• Coordinate and disseminate information to all stakeholders to solicit ongoing support from the State of Qatar for Endocrinology.
• Promote outreach and communications with non-Sidra providers of Endocrinology care to help Sidra function as the premier regional center in the Gulf Region.

General

• Conduct other duties as may be directed by the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• MD degree
• Residency training in Pediatrics
• Fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology

Experience

• 10 or more years of clinical experience
• 5 or more years in academic leadership as section chief or chief of Endocrinology

• Full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar with the position of Associate Professor or Professor of Pediatrics - Endocrinology
