Consultant Physician-Intensive Care Unit(ICU)

Role Overview

Consultant Physician-Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC).

Role Purpose

Lead and supervise the delivery of high-quality evidence-based care in the ICU, effectively diagnosing, managing and treating all patients under your care. Exemplify clinical excellence within the specialty and provide leadership and training to junior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Care Delivery

• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for the specialty.
• Oversee the clinical activities of junior medical staff and assume responsibility for the care they provide.
• Lead ward rounds and reassess both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with established best practice.
• Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
• Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
• Communicate clinical information to patients and patients' families and friends (with patient consent) in a timely manner.
• Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.

Clinical Documentation & Investigation Management

• Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
• Regularly review results of all investigations and modify treatment as required.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
• Actively participate in multidisciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.

Resource Management & Compliance

• Comply with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
• Practice appropriate utilization of the organization's resources.
• Support, implement and follow all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.

On-Call Coverage

• Participate in and ensure the provision of on-call coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.

Administrative & Governance

• Help lead and implement the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.

• Assist with scheduling and support the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times.
• Attend Divisional meetings as required.
• Assist the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
• Assume other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.

Quality Improvement & Audit

• Help lead quality improvement within the Department.
• Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
• Support the reporting, investigation and response to untoward incidents.

Teaching, Training & Professional Development

• Promote and assist in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
• Facilitate the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
• Show commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
• Foster a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department.
• Promote and participate in clinical research and publication.
• Keep abreast of current relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.

Regulatory Compliance

• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facilities policies.
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established timeframes.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with SSMC compliance guidelines.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

• Tier 1: Not less than 2 years relevant experience as a Consultant or equivalent post board certification.
• Tier 2: Not less than 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.

Special Provision for UAE Nationals

• Clinical Fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows: Each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience.
• Fellowship training must be from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, United States or HAAD accredited fellowship programs.

Required Educational Qualification

• Qualification from Tier 1 OR Qualification from Tier 2.
• Current national license or equivalent.
• Certified proof of yearly CME.
