Consultant Physician-Intensive Care Unit(ICU)

Role Overview

Consultant Physician – Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC). The role leads and supervises the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to all ICU patients, serving as a clinical exemplar and providing leadership and training to junior medical staff.

Role Purpose

To diagnose, manage and treat ICU patients according to established standards of best practice; oversee clinical activities of junior medical staff; implement hospital policies and initiatives; and foster a culture of quality improvement, learning and continuous professional development within the Department.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for the ICU specialty.
• Lead ward rounds and reassess both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with established best practice.
• Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
• Regularly review results of all investigations and modify treatment as required.
• Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
• Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
• Communicate clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends (with patient consent) in a timely manner.
• Comply with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
• Practice appropriate utilization of the organization's resources.

Clinical Leadership & Supervision

• Oversee the clinical activities of junior medical staff and assume responsibility for the care they provide.
• Promote and assist in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
• Facilitate the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
• Provide leadership and training for junior medical staff as an example of clinical excellence.

Stakeholder Management & Collaboration

• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
• Actively participate in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
• Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.

On-Call Coverage

• Participate in and ensure the provision of on-call hours coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.

Quality & Governance

• Help lead quality improvement within the Department.
• Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
• Support the reporting, investigation and response to untoward incidents.
• Help lead and implement the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.

Administrative & Organizational

• Support, implement and follow all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
• Assist with scheduling and support the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times.
• Attend Divisional meetings as required.
• Assist the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
• Assume other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.
• Perform other clinical duties as assigned.

Professional Development & Learning

• Foster a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department.
• Show commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
• Promote and participate in clinical research and publication.
• Keep abreast of current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.

Compliance & Confidentiality

• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facilities policies.
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with SSMC guidelines.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

• Tier 1: Not less than 2 years relevant experience as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification.
• Tier 2: Not less than 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.

For UAE Nationals

• Clinical Fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows: each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience.
• Fellowship substitution only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowship in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, or HAAD accredited fellowship programs.

Required Education

• Qualification from Tier 1 OR Qualification from Tier 2.
• Current national license or equivalent.
• Certified proof of yearly CME.
