Consultant Physician-Intensive Care Unit(ICU)

Role Overview

Consultant Physician-Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC). The post holder leads and supervises the delivery of high-quality evidence-based care in the ICU, diagnosing, managing and treating all patients under their care while providing clinical leadership and training to junior medical staff.

Role Purpose

The Consultant Physician is responsible for delivering clinical excellence within the ICU specialty, providing evidence-based diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients, overseeing junior medical staff performance, and fostering a culture of quality improvement, learning and continuous development across the department.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for the ICU specialty
• Lead ward rounds and reassess both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with established best practice
• Review results of all investigations regularly and modify treatment as required
• Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent
• Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals
• Communicate clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends (with patient consent) in a timely manner
• Practice appropriate utilization of the organization's resources
• Comply with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices

Oversight & Supervision

• Oversee the clinical activities of junior medical staff and assume responsibility for the care they provide
• Provide leadership and training for junior medical staff
• Promote and assist in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff
• Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required
• Actively participate in multidisciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients

Administrative & Governance

• Support, implement and follow all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures
• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facilities policies
• Assist with scheduling and support the Division Chief in ensuring adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times
• Attend Divisional meetings as required
• Assist the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate
• Assume other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames
• Help lead and implement the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes
• Participate in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes

Quality & Safety

• Help lead quality improvement within the Department
• Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice
• Support the reporting, investigation and response to untoward incidents

Documentation & Recordkeeping

• Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures

Clinical Governance & Learning

• Foster a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department
• Facilitate the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty
• Show commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME)
• Promote and participate in clinical research and publication
• Keep abreast of current relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry

On-Call Coverage

• Participate in and ensure the provision of on-call hours coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required

Confidentiality & Compliance

• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with SSMC compliance guidelines

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

• Tier 1: Not less than 2 years relevant experience as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification
• Tier 2: Not less than 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute

For UAE Nationals

• Clinical Fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows: Each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience
• Only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowship in the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, or HAAD accredited fellowship programs

Required Educational Qualification

• Qualification from Tier 1 OR Qualification from Tier 2
• Current national license or equivalent
• Certified proof of yearly CME

Additional Information

• Participants are required to provide certified proof of yearly Continued Medical Education (CME)
• The role includes on-call responsibilities on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays
