Role Overview
Consultant Ophthalmologist at Astra ProMed, Dubai. Full-time position.
Role Purpose
Provide comprehensive ophthalmic consultations, examinations, diagnosis, and treatment. Deliver advanced clinical expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of ophthalmic conditions, with strong commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, and high-quality eye care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis
- Provide comprehensive ophthalmic consultations, examinations, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity assessment, slit-lamp examination, fundoscopy, and intraocular pressure measurement.
- Diagnose and manage cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, corneal diseases, and other ophthalmic disorders.
- Evaluate and manage patients with retinal, corneal, anterior segment, and optic nerve disorders.
- Diagnose and manage ocular infections, inflammatory eye conditions, and ophthalmic emergencies.
Diagnostic and Investigative Procedures
- Interpret diagnostic investigations, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual field testing, fundus photography, corneal topography, and ocular ultrasound.
Surgical Management
- Perform appropriate ophthalmic surgical procedures within the scope of clinical expertise and privileges.
- Perform cataract surgery, including phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation, where appropriately trained.
- Perform appropriate laser treatments and minor ophthalmic procedures within the authorized scope of practice.
- Provide comprehensive pre-operative assessment, surgical planning, informed consent, and post-operative follow-up.
Chronic Disease Management
- Monitor patients with chronic ophthalmic conditions and develop individualized long-term treatment plans.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Collaborate with optometrists, ophthalmic technicians, neurologists, endocrinologists, and other multidisciplinary specialists.
- Supervise and mentor junior physicians and ophthalmic healthcare professionals.
Patient Education and Communication
- Provide patient education regarding eye health, treatment options, surgical risks, recovery, and preventive care.
Governance and Professional Development
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and patient-safety standards.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, teaching, research, and CME activities.
Qualifications & Experience
- MBBS/MD or equivalent medical degree.
- Recognized postgraduate qualification in Ophthalmology.
- Board certification or equivalent recognized consultant qualification.
- Minimum 5–10 years of post-specialization experience in Ophthalmology.
- Strong clinical and surgical experience in diagnosing and managing complex ophthalmic conditions.
- Demonstrated competence in ophthalmic diagnostic procedures and relevant surgical interventions.
- Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Ophthalmology is highly desirable.
- Experience in cataract surgery, glaucoma management, retinal disorders, or corneal diseases is highly desirable.
- Eligible for DHA Consultant classification/license in Dubai, subject to applicable qualification and experience requirements.
