Consultant - General Surgery/Vascular

Role Overview

Consultant - General Surgery/Vascular at NMC Healthcare. The role provides consulting, operative, and attending services to patients of all age groups, including diagnosis, pre- and post-operative care in vascular and trauma surgery.

Role Purpose

To deliver expert surgical care across all degrees of complexity within vascular surgery competence, manage ambulatory and hospitalized patients, and uphold established medical, ethical, and legal standards while supporting continuous quality improvement and institutional compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Operations

• Provide consulting, operative (major and minor, elective and emergency), and attending services to patients of any age group.
• Deliver diagnosis, pre- and post-operative care for all operative cases and procedures in vascular and trauma surgery.
• Attend ambulatory and hospitalized surgical patients including cases of all degrees of complexity within area of competence and expertise.
• Provide surgical care of a more specialized nature as required.
• Perform all management functions and duties of a vascular surgeon.
• Render surgical care to patients as assigned.
• Assume after-hours responsibilities for care of assigned surgical cases and make daily rounds for hospitalized patients.
• Order diagnostic laboratory studies and X-ray examinations, determine diagnosis, and prescribe applicable therapy.
• Consult with anesthesiologist on choice of anesthesia to be used.

Quality Assurance & Governance

• Meet established medical, ethical, and legal rules in vascular surgery and practice state-of-the-art methods.
• Monitor and evaluate quality and appropriateness of patient care provided by all physicians within clinical privileges approved by the Credentials and Privileges Committee.
• Inform the Head of Department of unusual problems or actions taken regarding unusual cases.
• Strictly observe organization's medical regulations and policies especially those related to infection control, patient safety, patient assessment, and patient care.
• Strictly adhere to organization's regulations and policies especially those related to infection control, patient safety, EHSMS, HAAD, JCI, and ISO.
• Monitor clinical and other established indicators to ensure ongoing quality assurance.
• Participate in and contribute to morbidity and mortality reviews and peer review activities.
• Support Continuous Quality Improvement and participate and contribute to all quality assurance activities of the service.
• Develop and promote appropriate standards of departmental Key Performance Indicators.
• Participate and contribute in developing departmental guidelines, protocols, manuals, and pathways in line with international standards and statutory requirements.

Professional Development & Collaboration

• Provide consultation services to physicians, other surgeons, and specialists.
• Make recommendations to the Head of Department regarding medical referrals.
• Participate in and contribute to in-service activities such as lectures, conferences, and rounds.
• Participate in monthly staff meetings.
• Participate in hospital committee functions as assigned.
• Participate and contribute in scheduled in-service training programs, Continuing Nursing Education, Continuing Medical Education, in-house activities, conferences, or other programs as requested.

Standards & Compliance

• Adhere to the By-laws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Department and ensure work performed is in keeping with established standards of JCI.
• Develop thorough understanding of policies and procedures of the hospital and demonstrate respect for them.
• Maintain confidentiality as per signed agreement.
• Exercise effective interpersonal skills in dealings with department staff, associates, and management.
• Demonstrate ability to listen to others in promoting effective communication.
• Carry out other duties when requested by Head of Department.

Qualifications & Experience

• Graduation from an approved medical school plus internship.
• Three years residency in Vascular Surgery culminating in a Postgraduate Master's degree and/or equivalent Fellowships approved by HAAD.
• HAAD License to practice.
• Three or more years exclusive practice of Vascular Surgery since certification.
• Thorough knowledge of medical ethics.

Skills & Competencies

• English required to prepare documentation and used as the common language to communicate with different nationalities.
• Basic knowledge of medical Arabic desirable.
