Consultant General Surgeon

Role Overview

Consultant General Surgeon at Astra ProMed, Dubai. Full-time position.

Role Purpose

Deliver comprehensive surgical consultation, diagnosis, and management of patients with general surgical conditions. Perform elective and emergency procedures with advanced expertise in general, laparoscopic, and minimally invasive surgery, maintaining clinical excellence and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis

• Provide comprehensive consultation and diagnosis of patients with general surgical conditions.
• Diagnose and manage conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal organs, abdominal wall, and soft tissues.
• Interpret relevant investigations, including ultrasound, CT, MRI, endoscopic findings, and laboratory results.
• Assess and manage acute abdominal emergencies, surgical infections, and trauma-related conditions.

Surgical Procedures

• Perform elective and emergency general surgical procedures within scope of clinical expertise.
• Perform laparoscopic and open surgical procedures, including appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and hernia repair.
• Evaluate and manage gallbladder disease, appendicitis, abdominal hernias, intestinal obstruction, and other abdominal surgical conditions.
• Perform appropriate gastrointestinal and colorectal surgical procedures where appropriately trained.
• Manage soft-tissue masses, cysts, abscesses, and other minor surgical conditions.
• Perform or supervise minimally invasive surgical interventions using modern surgical techniques.

Pre- and Post-operative Care

• Provide comprehensive pre-operative assessment, surgical planning, and informed consent.
• Deliver post-operative care and identify and manage post-operative complications, including bleeding, infection, and wound-healing problems.

Collaboration & Leadership

• Collaborate with gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, oncologists, intensivists, and other multidisciplinary specialists.
• Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, residents, and surgical team members.

Education & Compliance

• Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, treatment options, potential risks, recovery, and follow-up care.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and patient-safety standards.
• Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, teaching, research, and CME activities.

Qualifications & Experience

• MBBS/MD or equivalent medical degree.
• Recognized postgraduate qualification in General Surgery.
• Board certification or equivalent recognized consultant qualification.
• Minimum 5–10 years of post-specialization experience in General Surgery.
• Strong experience in elective and emergency general surgical procedures.
• Demonstrated competence in laparoscopic surgery, abdominal surgery, hernia repair, and gastrointestinal surgical procedures.
• Experience managing complex surgical cases and post-operative complications.
• Eligible for DHA Consultant classification/license in Dubai, subject to applicable qualification and experience requirements.

Skills & Competencies

• Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Laparoscopic / Minimally Invasive Surgery is highly desirable.
• Excellent surgical and clinical skills.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and patient-management skills.
