Consultant Emergency Medicine

Role Overview

Consultant Emergency Medicine at SEHA Hospitals in Abu Dhabi. This is a senior clinical role responsible for delivering high-quality emergency medicine care, supervising junior medical staff, and contributing to continuous improvement across the department.

Role Purpose

Lead the delivery of evidence-based emergency medicine care to all patients presenting to the department. Diagnose, manage, and treat acute conditions while supervising clinical teams, collaborating across specialties, and maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence

• Lead and supervise the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care, effectively diagnosing, managing, and treating all patients within the specialty.
• Conduct patient examinations and take detailed medical histories.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
• Prescribe medications and therapies.
• Develop comprehensive treatment plans.

Patient Care Management

• Lead ward rounds.
• Manage both inpatient and outpatient cases.
• Communicate clinical information to patients and their families in a timely and compassionate manner.
• Ensure informed consent is obtained for procedures.

Supervision and Training

• Oversee the clinical activities of junior medical staff including specialists, general practitioners, and residents.
• Actively participate in instruction, guidance, and supervision of junior team members.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services.
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to ensure holistic patient care.

On-Call Coverage

• Participate in and ensure the provision of out-of-hours on-call coverage on a rotational basis, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.

Documentation and Compliance

• Accurately and clearly document all relevant clinical information in a timely fashion.
• Comply with all hospital, departmental, and Department of Health Abu Dhabi policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain infection control and patient safety standards.

Quality Improvement

• Participate in clinical audits.
• Participate in performance management systems including peer review.
• Participate in proactive risk management to foster continuous improvement in patient outcomes.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• MBBS or equivalent degree from a recognized medical school.
• Successful completion of a structured specialty training program (North American or European Board Certification, Fellowship of a Royal College, or equivalent qualification from a Department of Health Abu Dhabi-approved Tier 1 or Tier 2 country).
• Postgraduate qualification such as MD, MS, or DNB generally required.

Professional Experience

• Minimum of 3–7 years of post-specialty clinical experience in a recognized multidisciplinary setting, depending on the qualification and tier level.
• Experience gaps of more than two years require specific Department of Health Abu Dhabi approval or a return-to-practice program.

Licensing and Verification

• Eligibility for or a valid Department of Health Abu Dhabi license to practice in Abu Dhabi is a mandatory legal requirement.
• Primary Source Verification of all educational and professional documents through the Data Flow Group is mandatory.
• Successful completion of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi license exam unless exempted based on Tier 1 qualifications or experience.
• Valid certificate in Good Standing from the current or previous licensing authority.
