Consultant - Anaesthesia

Role Overview

Consultant - Anaesthesia at NMC Royal Hospital. The role administers anesthesia to patients during surgical and other medical procedures and holds responsibility for designated areas of administration under the general direction of the Chief Anesthesiologist.

Role Purpose

To provide safe and effective anesthetic care to patients across routine and emergency surgical procedures, obstetric cases, and critically ill patients, while maintaining high professional standards and contributing to the development of junior medical staff and nursing personnel.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Anesthesia Delivery

• Conduct anesthesia for routine and emergency surgical patients using the full range of anesthetic agents and appropriate dosages for all age groups.
• Conduct labour analgesia services.
• Provide anesthesia with appropriate dosages in routine or emergency situations across all age groups.
• Resuscitate as a team member and manage critically ill ventilated ICU patients.
• Manage patients during sedation and during the period of actual recovery from sedation and document monitoring.

Patient Assessment & Planning

• Conduct assessment and reassessment for all patients in the OPD, on admission, and prior to any procedure.
• Interview patients scheduled for surgery to assess and develop an anesthesia care plan and to establish rapport and allay fear and apprehension.
• See patients post-operatively to evaluate recovery from anesthesia, assess complications and make recommendations as indicated.

Supervision & Leadership

• Assist Chief Anesthesiologist in supervising day-to-day anesthetic work.
• Act as Chief Anesthesiologist as assigned in his absence.
• Take active part in the teaching of junior anesthesiologists and other nursing staff.
• Provide technical advice and guidance to nursing staff, other specialists and registrars as required, and provide orientation and training in new techniques and procedures.

On-Site Assessment & Environment Management

• In the absence of the Chief Anesthesiologist, provide on-site assessment of personnel, equipment and overall anesthesia environment.
• Organize a suitable call schedule to provide a satisfactory anesthetic service to the hospital.
• Stand on-call duty as assigned by Chief Anesthesiologist for emergency surgery, obstetrics and/or medical procedures.
• Provide on-call emergency services of anesthesia services.

Quality & Compliance

• Supervise and maintain appropriate documentation on controlled drugs for the division in the Obstetrical operating theaters and main O.R.
• Organize and direct quality improvement activities of the division, including preparing reports as required.
• Keep current with new procedures and techniques in the field of anesthesia.

Team & Emergency Response

• Actively participate in CPR.
• Perform such other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Chief Anesthesiologist.

Qualifications & Experience

• Graduate from an accredited school of medicine with an MBBS degree.
• Post-graduate degree in Anesthesia (MD Anesthesiology) or equivalent.
• At least three years of experience in anesthesiology.
• Current license in country of origin with Specialist Anesthesiologist DHA license to practice in Dubai, U.A.E.
• Valid ACLS license.

Skills & Competencies

• Comprehensive knowledge of safe use of all general anesthetic agents, techniques and methods currently accepted in the practice of anesthesia.
• Excellent command of oral and written English.
• Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable but not essential.
• High standard of professionalism.
• Ability to work in cordial conditions in group practice in a hospital setting.
