Clinical Midwife

Role Overview

Clinical Midwife at Sidra Medicine. The role provides safe and effective care to women during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and their newborn babies in the postpartum period with minimal supervision by the Clinical Nurse Leader/Clinical Midwife Leader.

Sidra Medicine operates according to Sidra Standards of Practice and maintains a Shared Leadership structure. The Clinical Midwife reports to the Chief Nursing Officer.

Role Purpose

Assess care needs, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care for women and families across the pre-conception, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. Ensure all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, aligned to Sidra Standards of Practice. Participate in supervision, orientation and training of staff and provide education to patients, families and students.

Key Responsibilities

Professionalism and Ethical Practice

• Make decisions related to the plans of care for women and their babies.
• Practice within the DHP Scope of Practice according to licensure within the State of Qatar.
• Assume responsibility for the delegation of aspects of care delivery.
• Assume responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods.
• Provide discharge planning for each woman, her baby and family.
• Ensure timely documentation of care, discharge planning and family education aligned to Sidra standards of documentation.
• Practice as an expert practitioner demonstrating critical and analytical thinking by problem solving and escalating appropriately in the process of care delivery.
• Independently initiate escalation of issues following the chain of command, utilizing resources as needed.
• Independently maintain licensure and regulatory requirements, including life support certifications and CPD requirements.
• Meet requirements of organizational, profession and departmental/role specific orientation competencies.
• Model appearance and behaviors that promote a positive image of midwifery.
• Adhere to time and attendance requirements.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Acknowledge own limitations in knowledge, judgment and/or skills, and function within those limitations.

Woman and Family Centered Care

• Provide holistic, woman and family centered care based on evidence and best practice.
• Anticipate and respond to woman and family care requirements that involve the pre-conception, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods.
• Provide newborn care and family planning services.
• Provide holistic care to women during labor, detect complications and abnormalities and initiate appropriate emergency interventions.
• Escalate concerns appropriately.
• Conduct normal births when required and carry out designated roles and tasks in the event of surgical intervention.
• Promote the access of medical care and assistance to pregnant women as needed.
• Provide advice on the promotion of health and wellbeing.
• Evaluate learning needs of the woman and/or family and provide appropriate educational programs and family education.

• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and measure outcomes.

• Participate in investigation of clinical incidents for safety and quality improvement.

• Communicate observations or concerns related to hazards and errors to patients, families and the health care team.
• Use organizational error reporting systems for near miss and event reporting.

• Assume responsibility and accountability for own clinical decision, delegation and provide supervision to team members according to their competence and scope of practice.

Staff Development and Mentorship

• Participate in new staff and student orientation.
• Assist in maintaining a suitable learning environment.
• Act as a preceptor and mentor in the supervision and teaching of new staff and students to develop their competence.

Shared Leadership

• Actively participate in and/or contribute to the Shared Leadership structure to promote and embed Shared Leadership.

Informatics

• Accurately, concisely and appropriately document care, interventions and outcomes in a timely manner.
• Practice contemporaneous documentation, ensuring entries into the medical record are recorded and signed in real time.
• Utilize data from the patient record to make decisions and respond to clinical decision-making supports and alerts.
• Protect confidentiality of protected health information in electronic health records.
• Follow all Hospital related policies and procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Midwifery or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and recognized post graduate program in Midwifery.
• Registered Midwife status required.

Experience

• Overseas candidates: 3 years of clinical experience as a midwife after completing the midwifery program and registration/licensing as a registered midwife.
• For Qatari Nationals, Qatar Universities graduates, offspring of Qatari women or offspring of residents, please refer to the DHP Circular No. 24/2020.

Licensure and Certification

• Valid professional Midwifery license for country of origin.
