Role Overview
Chief Chemist at ACWA Power, located in Qudra, Al Qasim, KSA. Reports to the Operations Manager.
Role Purpose
Supervise and control all plant chemistry parameters to ensure they remain within established limits. Oversee environmental compliance and laboratory activities in accordance with regulatory requirements, procedures, schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
- Comply with all safety rules and regulations and maintain full awareness of plant safety hazards.
- Familiarize yourself with regulatory requirements pertaining to environmental compliance, chemical usage, MSDS documentation, plant P&IDs, SOPs, Work Instructions, emergency operation procedures, and related documents.
- Ensure that all activities are carried out to established standards without risk to personnel, equipment, or environment.
- Ensure availability of MSDS for all chemicals.
Chemistry & Laboratory Operations
- Maintain all records related to plant chemistry.
- Ensure availability of all chemicals, dosing and testing equipment through effective planning.
- Review and approve plans, procedures, and schedules for plant chemistry activities such as acid cleaning and boil out.
- Ensure calibration of all laboratory equipment.
- Ensure regular measurement of water quality in the laboratory and suggest corrective actions as required.
- Monitor and report on stack emissions.
- Ensure proper waste disposal measures are implemented.
Equipment & Inventory Management
- Own annual and preventive maintenance of dosing and testing equipment.
- Ensure availability of bulk chemicals, fine chemicals, glassware, and other consumables.
- Raise Purchase Requisitions as required.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise, direct, and coordinate the activities of all personnel assigned to the Chemical Section.
- Provide on-the-job training to new employees and evaluate their OJT performance.
Reporting & Communication
- Prepare reports and suggest recommendations to the Operations Manager regarding modifications to the chemistry regime.
General
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Master Degree in Chemistry or Degree in Chemical Engineering (desired).
- Certified Environmental and Safety Qualification (preferred).
Experience
- Minimum 10 years in a related field.
- Above 10 years preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Awareness of Quality, Occupational Health & Safety, and Environment Management system principles.
- In-depth knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements.
- Hazard Risk Assessment capability.
- Aspect Impact Assessment capability.
- Knowledge of environmental and health impact of chemicals used in the plant.
- Well-versed in Power and Desalination operational activities.
- Excellent decision-making ability.
- Excellent analytical ability.
- Very good leadership ability.
- SAP working knowledge (preferred).
- ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 awareness or working knowledge (preferred).
