Role Overview

Assistant Manager - Credit Risk at Emirates Islamic Bank (UAE National), located in the UAE. This role supports Group Credit operations by reviewing credit applications, applying established credit risk controls, and verifying regulatory documentation standards.

Role Purpose

Evaluate credit proposals from Wholesale banking business units, assess credit risk, recommend mitigating measures, and ensure the Corporate Credit portfolio maintains quality and compliance with internal policies and UAE Central Bank regulations. Monitor portfolio health, reduce non-performing loans, and advise business units on managing difficult accounts.

Key Responsibilities

Credit Assessment & Underwriting

  • Evaluate credit proposals submitted by Wholesale banking business units and submit recommendations to management.
  • Review credit applications to ensure alignment with internal risk policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Validate supporting financial documents and credit information for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify inconsistencies or potential red flags in borrower profiles and escalate as appropriate.
  • Document credit assessment findings clearly to support transparent decision-making.
  • Coordinate with relationship managers to clarify application details and mitigate information gaps.

Portfolio Monitoring & Management

  • Maintain good quality of the Corporate Credit portfolio for allocated accounts and business units.
  • Close monitoring of portfolio of one or more Commercial Banking Units, especially accounts on borderline status (OLEM/Substandard) to ensure they do not become non-performing.
  • Monitor exception reports, excesses, past dues, and utilisation with respect to the allocated portfolio.
  • Review and make appropriate recommendations for provisioning of weaker accounts within the portfolio allocated.
  • Undertake sector and portfolio reviews.
  • Proactively manage portfolio through regular monitoring of accounts, especially PD/OLEM/EAR/PROV forecast accounts, repayments and reduce NPLs.
  • Monitor all exceptions on a proactive basis and minimise review overdue, covenant overdue, and DDR.

Risk Mitigation & Compliance

  • Evaluate credit risk and suggest mitigating measures where possible.
  • Apply established credit risk controls when processing loan applications to minimise operational errors.
  • Ensure lending proposals are in compliance with policies and UAE Central Bank regulations.
  • Verify that all credit files meet regulatory documentation standards prior to approval.
  • Ensure mandatory disclosures and compliance checklists are completed for each application.
  • Monitor adherence to data privacy and confidentiality standards throughout the assessment process.
  • Flag process deviations or control breaches to the manager for timely remediation.
  • Escalate covenant breaches and other audit remarks.
  • Escalate potential compliance gaps or irregularities to the manager without delay.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Regulatory & Internal Reporting

  • Maintain accuracy and quality of comments on various reports; monitor exception reports and accounts for timely inclusion on EAR as per control and monitoring requirements.
  • Assist in preparing periodic reports for regulatory or internal audit purposes.
  • Ensure IFRS9 Governance and Staging completion per policy.
  • Contribute towards achieving acceptable INA rating as a minimum, measured by GCD INA rating.
  • Support ENBD ESG initiative through automation of scorecard integrated in nCino (Loan Origination System) for credit assessment of proposals greater than AED 50 million.
  • Maintain accurate records of credit decisions in the bank's risk management system.
  • Support periodic process reviews by providing input on observed risks or inefficiencies.

Data Management & Systems

  • Input and update credit risk data in core banking and risk management platforms with precision.
  • Cross-check system entries against source documents to prevent data integrity issues.
  • Identify and report data discrepancies or system errors to relevant stakeholders.
  • Support data quality initiatives by participating in periodic data cleansing exercises.

Stakeholder & Business Support

  • Advise business units with respect to managing difficult accounts and monitor their progress.
  • Maximise returns from a relationship by advising relationship teams and management on strategies for various groups.
  • Analyse requests for changes in documentation and standard terms, including liaising with stakeholders such as Legal and CRAD.
  • Maintain service quality and adherence to TATs, measured via Track Soft or similar reports.
  • Provide proactive business support and quality interaction with allocated business units through two-way engagement.
  • Understand customer needs and undertake business unit and customer visits as required.

Process Improvement & Initiatives

  • Contribute towards policy and process revisions, industry reviews, and DLA authorities and controls.
  • Provide suggestions for overall improvement in procedures or processes.
  • Contribute towards policy and process revisions.
  • Participate in special projects from time to time as assigned.
  • Ensure proactive dynamic redistribution of workload among GCD staff by supporting other teams to achieve TAT for business proposals.
  • Support improvement of credit request processing end-to-end TAT.
  • Contribute to positive team spirit.
  • Execute any other special tasks assigned by GCCO, Head of Credit Risk Management, or Head of Credit Review.

People & Professional Development

  • Develop initiative to improve knowledge and develop technical and soft skills through completion of required training programs, including AI-related training courses.
  • Develop product, policy, and procedures knowledge.
  • Facilitate effective interaction with colleagues to share knowledge and aim at Customer Satisfaction, measured via GCD CSAT scores.
  • Support teamwork for various initiatives such as ideas and actions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field.
  • Diploma or certification in banking or finance.
  • 3+ years of banking experience.
  • 1 year of experience in corporate credit.
  • Credit Risk Certification (CRC) or equivalent preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of corporate products including Trade Finance, Treasury, and Syndications/Club deals; Real estate and Project finance.
  • Ability to manage high volumes while ensuring required due diligence.
  • Ability to work independently and positive team spirit.
  • Ability to interact with various levels of seniority.
  • Initiative to learn and improve credit skills.
  • Ongoing professional development in credit risk or banking regulations.
