Role Overview
2nd Officer for Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger with NMDC Group.
Role Purpose
Perform navigational watchkeeping and bridge operations while assisting the Master in voyage planning, dredging operations, and safe execution of marine activities. Act as the designated Safety Officer, ensuring crew welfare and regulatory compliance across all vessel operations.
Key Responsibilities
Navigation & Watchkeeping
- Perform navigational watchkeeping duties in accordance with STCW, COLREG, and company procedures to ensure the safe operation of the vessel.
- Maintain and update navigational charts, publications, ECDIS, and other bridge documentation.
- Monitor weather, tidal conditions, navigational warnings, and maritime traffic to support safe navigation and operational planning.
- Assist the Master in voyage planning, navigation, dredging operations, and safe execution of marine activities.
Equipment & Systems
- Monitor the operation and maintenance of navigational equipment, communication systems, and bridge instruments.
- Ensure lifesaving appliances (LSA), firefighting equipment (FFA), and emergency equipment are inspected and maintained in a state of readiness.
Safety & Compliance
- Act as the designated Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with HSE policies, risk assessments, and permit-to-work procedures.
- Ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, ISPS Code, and company policies.
- Maintain statutory certificates, safety records, and operational documentation in compliance with Flag State, Class, and company requirements.
Safety Training & Emergency Preparedness
- Plan, coordinate, and conduct emergency drills, safety inspections, and onboard training for the crew.
Deck Operations
- Supervise deck operations, including mooring, anchoring, towing, pilot transfer, and cargo-related activities.
- Supervise deck ratings during watchkeeping and routine maintenance activities.
Dredging Operations
- Assist in monitoring hopper loading, ballast operations, vessel stability, trim, and draft during dredging operations.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare reports, maintain bridge and safety logs, and contribute to continuous improvement in safety and operational performance.
Coordination
- Coordinate with the Master, Chief Officer, Chief Engineer, and Dredge Master to support safe and efficient dredging operations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Certificate of Competency as Officer in Charge of Navigation Watch.
- Basic and advanced STCW training.
- Valid medical certificate.
- Minimum 5 years' experience on Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
